I can't live much longer with the rattle coming for the collector box on my R100GSPD classic. On the outside the box is in excellent condition but as I believe this is a common problem, the baffles have become detached inside. So the obvious solution is throw £200 at it and fit a new Y piece. Simple solution. It's then its not original but I guess only real purists would object.

Is there another option ie, cut open the box remove baffles and then have a stainless steel plate welded back over the hole? I've no idea if this is an option but I guess it could also be a cheaper solution. Or am I just being stupid?

Keihan used to do a very good replacement Bob, and it’ll run better than with a Y piece.

Thanks Nin. I checked but it seems they now (in the catalogue anyway) just do a Y piece. Must admit I'm tempted to keep it original if I can. May if necessary try to locate a specialist welder. Actually, I'm assuming its stainless not chrome. Better check.

Seems like you're right Bob. I've just checked the Motobins site (they get theirs from Keihan too) and they've only got the Y piece and state that it replaces the collector box.

I'll have to look after mine then.

Thinking about it, I'm assuming that the collective thinking, is that the engine runs better with the OM box complete with baffles which offer a resistance. So in terms of smooth running, there is probably not much difference between a Y piece and a debaffled collector box. Unless you know different of course.

I cut the original open, removed the loose bits and welded it back together - it’s been like that for a good few years now, I will get around to replacing the whole system at some point. I’ve never noticed any difference in running.

I have cut these open at the back and repaired or removed the loose baffle then rewelded a stainless plate.
If you need it doing probably easiest through mikeyboy & O&C of this parish.
The problem with a lot of stainless silencers is that the internals are mild steel and rot or if stainless internals (rare) they work harden and fracture through vibration.

Just a side note, i removed the OEM collector from the HPN thinking it would save weight..Im not sure it made any difference to the running, but it was a lot louder with the Y piece. I'm now back to the OEM collector.

I’ve got a collector box off an R80GS Basic you can have for a small consideration😀. It’s rusty on the outside but solid inside

Really helpful to know Mistacat.

I'm certainly capable of performing the bafflechtomy myself but I'd probably seek out a professional welder to stitch it back up. Shouldn't be too hard to find. May go down that route. In the mean time, while that was being done, fit a secondhand Y piece as an experiment if I can find one. It appears that on an R100, if you tweak the carb settings, you can actually get increased power with a Y piece. I'm not looking for that really but it would be better than introducing a flat spot which is a possible consequence I hear. Can always sell the Y piece on again after buffing up.

Thanks for this Madhatter. I would but as the rest of the bike is in such good condition, I really want to fit something that is in equivalent condition. Interesting though as it appears this is a chromed component not stainless steel.
