So my squeaky noise is due the the flap being stuck

I've manage to free it off and its moving again, albeit not full travel

I'm wondering if the reason they stick is stretch in the cable, which means they dont turn! And then sticking is the only thing left !!!

Anyway I've just had a price on a replacement, reassuringly expensive is the best way to take it :eek

I was thinking of removing the old one and dropping it in an ultrasonic bath to see if that will shift the crap that's stuck in there ??

It looks like the bottom ( not gubbins end) bearing is the issue, I'm wondering if I can get the cap off, whether i could pack the cap with grease and refit

Thoughts

it would have to be pretty special grease - its only inches from the catalytic converters that runs between 400°C (752°F) and 800°C (1472°F)
I have a 2011 TC that never been ridden in the rain and only has 10k miles - I've cleaned and lubed it every ride since I got it 2 years ago - its just started to struggle with the flap valve

Any reason you don’t want to replace the whole thing, flapper, cables and servo and plug in a Servo Buddy? I did this on my R9t. Much neater.

If you can do without it for a while Mart, I'll grab it off you and free it up as a workshop project when I'm bored between jobs at work.

It'll be combustion deposits built up in the bushings, seizing the butterfly operating spindle.

If I can free it up with some heat and persuasion, followed by a solvent soak and then a lubricating with graphite, it should be good to go.

Mine sized several times so I removed it,
and put a link pipe in..no difference attall too the engine/noise..
I left the servo comected so as not too throw an error code..

Mart, did I give you a short link pipe with the Titanium end can ?

If not, I might have a link pipe kicking around at home somewhere.

I dismantled mine and lubricated the pivot with graphite powder which I’d mixed with oil before reassembling.

The oil will burn off but before it does it helped get the graphite into the nooks and crannies and that shouldn’t burn off or at least will last longer.

So far so good

At around 50k miles my original flap finally seized. Found an almost new one on eBay of an RT9. Perfect fit and not fractionally quieter - though I'm still amazed these bikes every passed the test as they're not exactly quiet!

It's freed off

I was going to drop it in an ultrasonic bath and then puff graphite into the bearing faces,

They are carbon bearings so are self lubricating

I think the cables stretch, which stops the movement, then they sieze

I can't be 100% but I'm thinking they are graphite bearings, the kind impregnated into a wire mesh. My own guess is, they actually wear out allowing too much play and corrosion too screw it up. Yes you might free it all up, but I'd guess it'll lock up again in the foreseeable future (another year with regular use maybe?)

A spray of Arrow Superslaks every now and then should keep it moving.

The penetrating oil will burn off but the colloidal graphite will lube it under high temperatures.

Strange, I've had maybe 8 bikes with the flap gs and xr and never had a problem with them,I jet wash and use my bikes all year round. Usually do 13k a year.
So what's the reason some are blighted with the problem and other's not?.

do you have diagnostics ?

unless you check for codes, quite likely you'll never know its broken

I have a low mileage 2011 TC and no codes showing at all with GS-911. Do you know if the flappy valve error code is stored, or is it only visible when engine running?

Nope but never had a squeaky one either or an eml or a problem in any way, most failures seem to start with a noise from what I read on here.
