Exhaust Headers Looking a bit Worse for Wear

The exhaust headers on my 2010 GS are looking a little worse for wear - as in corroded not accident damaged.

What is the best option to replace? I don't want to de-cat or similar.

Are they pretty straight forward to swap - just bolt-off, bolt-on?
 
If they're stainless then this is normal. You can keep cleaning them every so often if you're fussed about it, otherwise just leave them as is.
 
Elbow grease and "Shiny Sinks" - It's a cleaner for stainless steel kitchen wear.

This works fine on stainless, but I'm guessing yours had the "chrome" option if they're looking corroded?

Replacement standard headers crop up quite often second hand for not too much money. Try the "Wanted" section or eBay.
 
Have to endorse Bodad . Blu job is expensive but impressive. It's a powder which you dip a damp rag into and then rub over. Thing is its not a rust or crud remover, you need to get all that crap off prior. Blue job will Polish even the blue colour out of a chrome pipe, won't stop it coming back later though. Perhaps best to get a second hand one as suggested if too bad.

If it bothers you that much and you're willing to stump up for another set of headers what about Ceramic coating? I've not had it done but it gets good reviews. Personally I find if you just leave the whole bike dirty you just don't notice the grungy headers:D
 
$78 for a quart of the chrome stuff........... is it just spray on and polish when dry or is there some convoluted procedure to it??

I take it that a quart would easily do headers and link pipe?

My '08 GSA chrome headers are covered in black spots where winter road salt and heat have attacked the chrome. I presume yours is the same ??

Its a shame as I like to keep my bike tidy (which it otherwise is).

Would that Blu job sort it ??
 
I tried the 'blu job' on my 2013 headers, I couldn't get the blueing out no matter how hard I tried. A drop of petrol to get the tar spots of first, then good old 'Solvol Autosol' I've found to be about the best, but even that doesn't get the blueing out unfortunately.

The best stuff on the market is Yoshimura Stain-Magic, bloody expensive but will shift anything and bring your pipes up like new. You will get it on Ebay. Look on YouTube and see the results.

Surely black on the inside will promote heat transfer into the pipe?

I think I remember that people who rode the old triumph twins would wrap some copper wire round the top of the headers to stop the blueing , might be an old wives tale though
