Exhaust Headers Looking a bit Worse for Wear

Instead of buying optiglanz just use wonder wheels, it's the same stuff and cheaper.

Bluing can be removed, as fatnfast showed above.

Bluing is chromium oxide, which forms when the exhaust heats and the chrome oxidises, so it will only be on the surface of the pipe.

I used Raceglaze Alutech to remove the bluing from my downpipes. This is what they looked like before:

After about five hours of polishing by hand, the first one looked like this:

Then I got out my dual-action polisher to speed things up and after a few hours work, they looked like this:

The hard part is keeping them that shiny. I treated mine with Gyeon Q2 RIM, which should have prevented them from oxidising when they heated, but it burnt off and they've started to turn blue again. I'm not sure what went wrong, but I'm going to polish them again and treat them again in case I did something wrong the first time. If they turn blue again, I'm not going to worry about it.

You've done a great job but IME the blueing always returns. That said I like the blue though I'd rather have the clear chrome further down rathe than the straw colour stainless that eventually goes grey.

The Japanese solved the problem with a twin wall pipe. Threading another pipe down those headers will be fun. ;)
