whats the big story with people shearing the studs?

Aint it enuf just to soak in WD40/apply heat/repeat several times before easing the nut off?

:nenau

Isnt it just heavy handed lumps applying cold pressure to old 'nuts' buggering the job up?

If you have attempted/done it - how did it go for yow?

Nut

My studs were so eaten by rust that nothing would have worked. The stud was OK inside the acorn nut and in the head but the exposed metal was gone.

Drilled them out, new stainless studs. Job done in about half an hour.

I assume that either you've never removed your exhaust headers (in which case, wait till you've tried it ;) ) or you're feeling smug because yours undid ok?

I applied plusgas / heat for a week before trying to remove mine.

It made sod all difference - two of them sheared off where they were severely waisted behind the nut and the other four studs wound themselves out of the head with nuts still firmly attached (3 per side on an 1100).

The domed nuts and studs were a just an amorphous blob of rust which was never going to come apart.

never assume... it may make an ass out of you and/or me

I am never smug, I live in the north east

many people had trouble with the 1150's studs?

I will be ATTEMPTING to remove mine hopefully next week! :blast

I managed to shear one of mine after days of plusgas, I was only using a dinky quarter drive ratchet too, and I almost never shear fastenings.

Nothing worse than trouble with your nuts,

Don't confuse yourself. 1100 nuts are a nightmare - 1150 nuts are usually not a problem.

But as a matter of course once a year undo them, apply the appropriate lubrication and replace and you'll never have trouble with your nuts again.

That's what I do and I've never had any trouble removing them. It reminds me of when I bought a Moto Guzzi years ago. One of the issues with them then used to be the front engine mounting stud, which was prone to seizing in the frame. This made engine removal a right PITA. Once the pioneers had come back with arrows in their backs and the problem became known, the rest of us used to remove said stud and Coppaslip it before the problem arose. Preventative maintenance, I believe it's called.

I'm running with 3 on my 1150:rolleyes:

Best tip I was given was to drill a small hole in the top of the cap nut and spray the plus gas in there - let it soak in for a while too.

Likewise ;)
I'm minus the inboard stud on one side of my 1100 (but at least you get three per side on an 11). If / when I ever have to remove the head (it's still on the original, not very good gasket), I'll drill it out and change it. Until then it's staying as it is - think of the weight saving :D

Fook. My 02 GS and RT have probably never had them loosened.

I bet if I try to do as Steptoe says one or more will break. I think I should leave well alone.....

....unless I'm bored and I've had a few :jager on a nice sunny weekend that is.

I've only got 3 nuts left on my 1150 and I think if I get the spanners out I'll have even fewer :tears
Advice on here was to leave well alone until the winter.
I'll probably replace them all then. Is stainless studs and nuts best?

Stainless studs (plenty of anti-seize on the studs before they go in), brass nuts - never seize again :thumb
