Exhaust markings

Been looking at my nice new 1100GS exhaust which I collected at Verns today from Big Den and see its got an E marking on it. Had a look at the titanium one that's been on since I got the bike and it has no markings on it, not even a "Not for Road use" etc etc

The titanium can is a straight through one, but the bike has recently passed its MOT and isn't very loud, IMO. The bike does have the Remus alternative mid can, ie not the single pipe that is thought to be fairly loud.

With no markings at all, where is the bike in the legal quagmire of "E" markings / MOTs / etc etc?

The MoT requirements in respect of exhaust markings changed a couple of years ago, when the requirement for BS or EU-marking on the exhaust silencer was removed.

The tester is required to check the exhaust for security, deterioration and completeness, and with the engine running they will assess the silencer's effectiveness in reducing as far as is reasonable the noise emitted.

If the MoT Inspector then thinks the condition or type of exhaust is such that the noise emitted is clearly in excess of a standard silencer in average condition, or he finds some unacceptable markings such as track use only or not for road use, then the bike will fail.

That's correct for MOT purposes but isn't true for whether or not the can is road legal under terms of Construction and Use Regulations.

Yup..tis true that the can doesn`t need to be marked to pass an MOT.

On the Remus system for the 1100 the BS numbers were actually on the intermediate silencer 'box' instead of the end can.
