Exhaust Pipe Cleaning

I remember reading a post months ago where someone used a liquid or paste as a cleaner to bring the pipes from the engine back to an almost as new look. Does anyone have any idea what that would have been and where I can get it?

likely the gel acid stuff they use to clean stainless with... you need to be careful with that stuff

Maybe he's thinking of wonder wheels which does the job

Solvol Autosol and a brillo pad does the job for me when I can be bothered

What sort of pipes do you have, stainless or chromed. I know your profile has 1100GS but it's not unkonown for that to be fprgotten when changing bikes

If it is a 1100 your asking after, then the acid based ones AFAIK will remove the chrome and then you'll just have stainless steel ones. From previous threads people have sworn by Autosol, as mentioned earlier, or Peeks polish.

If you've got stainless pipes they will only go back to the straw colour hoever much you polish them.

Sorry does not compute...

Cleaning - yes as part of a normal bike wash.

Polishing - not a chance, life's too short and they'll tarnish again almost immediately anyway.

Thanks for the replies folks. Think Autosol was probably what I'm thinking of. Giving the 1100 a thorough overhall as I can't ride the thing at the moment having been knocked of my Sprint ST a couple of weeks ago and thats in bike heaven, so until my leg is healed enough that I can ride the GS I thought I'd just tinker with it and give it a good old clean...might as well let her have a bit of tlc once in her lifetime

Shiny, to start with, and then when the chrome is polished off it doesn't corrode

Probably too many banned chemicals used to get chrome to sick onto steel which is why you don't see many chromed bumpers on cars.

Hein Gericke used to do a wee spray bottle of acid cleaner that was meant for cleaning header pipes,used it once & it worked really well with no effort involved.

If they are stainless and you want them clean then buy yourself a polishing mop kit for about £25.00 , take off the system and spend about a day polishing them up to a mirror finish.

Ride 50 miles and they will start to go brown again, but its good fun to do once , plus you will most probably knacker up you drill !

The std silencer on 1150's is chromed stainless, just stops it goiing straw coloured and no rust.

Even the 1150 changed over it's lifetime, on my 02 GS the exhaust pipes went a nice blue, 05 GSA they went more of the shitty straw colour you see on the 1200's.
