Hello

I need some exhaust pipes for a r100gs.

I want them with balancer pipe. Can be in stainless steel or the “normal” new or used.

Where can I find them? The large majority of the pipes that I can find are in stainless steel without balancer…

Thanks in advance

Sure?...

I thought that all airhead had a balance pipe in the downpipe….
Even 1200cc have them or am I wrong?

My "standard" pipes have a 25mm od balance pipe then the pipes go into the standard collector and out to the single exhaust
1991 GSPD r100 :thumb2
My tuther faster bike has a Kleinen set of single pipes into a Y peice then off out of a Remus :thumb2

I thought he was talking about replacing with s/s...very few replace the OE system and have a balance pipe and a collector box.
Out of the factory, yes, but if I was buying a replacement s/s set, I wouldn't include a balance pipe for a airhead GS, looks better without it:).
My own pd has an OE balance pipe fitted as standard :)

BTW beside the looks is there any reason to replace the pipes with ones without the balance pipe?
From what I remember from my engineering books the purpose of the balance pipe is to help removing the exhaust gases from the cylinder creating a pulsing effect => maximizing the scavenging effect .

But from what I see most of the people just remove it… it’s only a matter of looks?

If an Airhead is run without a collector box then they run much better with a balance pipe, and vice versa!

So the balance pipe not needed if a collector box is still connected - interesting.
Why did they install them from the factory then?
So when replacing pipes what would be the best option for performance/ fuel economy etc? No collector & a Y pipe but with balancer pipe or, no balance pipe but with Y pipe etc?

BSM pipes

Hello!
Boxxerparts usually had stainless steel exhaust pipes with balance pipe, but are no longer in catalogue.
I think they were brand BSM.
You can contact them at bsm-exhausts.com

The crossover pipe usually seems to improve things, particularly if you have a restrictive muffler.

The conventional wisdom is that a 1000 cc motor wont work with the small G/S collector, but my 1000 cc G/S runs very well with the 800 cc collector and muffler, and Staintune front pipes with a crossover.

The Staintune muffler sounds a bit, err, freer flowing than stock too, and according to those who claim to have tested a less restrictive muffler will improve most Airheads - so this is probably part of the equation on this bike too.

We now have to make the best of what is available within reason, my G/S has no balance pipe but does now have a collector box, it ran poorly without it, whereas the GSPD still has the original headers with the balance pipe but has a 'Y' piece and runs reasonably but I have a plan to make it run properly like the G/S which has the Siebenrock 1000cc conversion!
