At the weekend I removed the original BMW collector and can and replaced them with a Remus Y piece and Sebring can.

Not being mechanically minded can someone please help with the following....

Is it neceesary to have some sort of rubber washer / damper where the can fits onto the frame (see blue arrow)

One of the joints between the header pipes and Y piece leaked despite tightening clip. What to do ?.....use a couple of clips or is there any type of paste to be used to get a better seal ?

Not familier with the sebring can, but most have a rubber washer/buffer, to help dampen vibration, which can lead to cracks in the can/Y piece. .

Use silicone sealer to cure any leaks.

Thanks Neil :thumb

The Sebring can just has a metal bracket with a hole through so I will reinstall using some form of rubber washer between it and the bike frame. However, as you might be able to see from the pic, there is a rubber seal beneath the large clip that goes all the way round the can which I presume helps to dampen.

Is there a silicon sealant specifically made for use with exhausts or will any do provided it can withstand the correct temperature. Is it just a case of smearing this on the outside of one pipe before slipping the larger pipe over it.

Regards

Any clear silicone will do, but you can get low acid silicone specific for automotive use, but all will with stand the temprature.

Yellow Bath/Shower sealant would suit. ;)

I used the stuff they use to seal fish tanks with no problems. ;)

If you have to use a silicone sealant for exhaust check the temperature range with the manufacture, the best i have seen is about 250 c in spikes check the loctite or 3 M sites for data sheets , i am not aware of any automotive use on exhausts
Dont whatever you do use it on the Y piece upstream of the Lamda sensor
silicone can / will poisen the Lamda ( google it )
cheap sh*t B&Q bathroom, amine cure sealers ( smells like vinegar ) should not be confussed with automotive grade sealers.
