Exhaust sealant??

Just took out the old exhaust gasket and ther is evidence that some compound or other has been used but only on the engine side.

Is this normal?

any recommendations for what product to use when reassembling?

Give the area a good clean up and just use a nice new set of exhaust gaskets. No need for any sealant.
 
That was my plan until I saw what was under the old gaskets and more importantly why (???) it was used, don't really want to put new gaskets in to find they blow.

Hell, just realised Motor-Works are just round the corner from me so can always pick up new gaskets if required. :blast
 
I have just done this with a nice new set of gaskets as Chris suggests.
my new gaskets kept falling out as I offered up my header pipe to re fit them so to secure them in place I smeared a small amount of copper grease on the engine side of the gasket. not much just enough to hold it in place while I re fitted the headers on my own

Maybe someone was too tight to buy new gaskets and used sealant on old ones after removing the exhaust for some reason.

That was my thought however it was bought new and only serviced by BMW so can't see why the exhaust has been removed or if it has why they wouldn't have used new gaskets.
 
I've removed several headers on 1200's and they only had the metal flame ring type gaskets in them, no sign of sealant. I suspect a bodge.

When I take out the other gasket I'll take a picture of the muck behind the gasket, maybe it's just oxidation?
 
I've kept the original gaskets in my GS. But the previous bike had exhaust port gaskets that were all but invisible. Only when digging them out was it clear what was gasket and what was cylinder head metal.

Another thought
Stick the gasket in with a dab of high temperature exhaust paste. Use clear silicone sealer on the remaining joints.
