I have a couple of bikes that would be improved by larger heat shields for the exhausts. I am fed up with melting my trousers when they touch the pipes. It is particularly frustrating because it usually happens close to an existing small and mostly cosmetic guard.
I am going to try knocking something up in carbon fibre and use the existing welded on tabs to secure them.
One bike does not currently have a guard so I have nothing to mount a heat shield to. Does anyone have any bright ideas on something I can use to fix the shield on? I do not want to take the pipe off then find someone to weld something on. Mostly because I do not kniw anyone lically that could do this but also because it is a real pain to extract the exhaust header.
I have found on internet searches some standoff hose clips in the US that seem to be aimed at TV aerial mounts. I haven't found what we call them here, and they would hold a shield a bit too far away from the pipe at 25mm. I am thinking of a 10mm gap between pipe and heat shield to keep the heat transfer down and not be too bulky..

jubilee clips/similar with little brackets holding captive nuts. Got a pair with a placcy heatshield of ebay a while back to do that very thing on the exposed exhaust pipe just behind the cat on a KTM1190R.

Hi IainMac,

Where can I buy those from? That is what I am after but I only want the jubliee clip whatsit. I ave no idea where to get them in teh UK, apart from buying a crappy placcy heatshield on EBay then throwing the guard away...

Loads of stuff online for heat shields for kit cars , most use stainless steel band clamps to hold them in place
