Exhaust studs FUBAR

Hi all, before I begin, let me say that I have done a search and found a number of threads on this subject, however, they all seem to be getting old, so I thought I'd ask just in case there is any new technolegy or methods out there.

So, the studs on one of my 1100's are very bad (original exhaust and dome nuts not domed any more :eek:) and although they are not causing leakage at the moment, I thought it might be prudent to get them replaced before the summer jaunt to Spain.

So, what is the best way to get them out without shearing them off, and once I have sheared them off, what's the best solution for getting the remnants out of the head without major expense.

I'm not a mechanic but can do nuts and bolts jobs, and I do have access to various forms of heat, and having read varoius threads, it would appear that stud extractors are best left on the shelf??
 
They will almost certainly snap off,:D:blast
I don't fuck about anymore,just take the heads off ,over to the engineering chap,get the heads in a milling machine and drill accurately,not worth the hassle for £20 a stud.
Just my opinion of course,feel free to reach for the black and decker and £2 set of eazyouts :rob
 
Thanks Mike, so all I need to do is get the headers off (once I've snapped off all the bolts :rolleyes:) and then remove the heads ( will I need new stretch bolts and gaskits??) tyake heads to an engineering firm (what type of firm should I be looking for, what machines do they need to have to do a proper job?) and pay the bill :D
Any that you can recommend that I can ship the heads to?

I took my heads to James at Baldyne engineering in Orpington, Kent (tel 01959 532443). He did a good job of drilling out the old studs and inserting steel thread inserts so that I could fit new stainless exhaust studs. He comes recommended by local mechanics.
 
Thanks, Guys, two options for me to consider, although, tell me, if they have to drill them out, is it a foregone conclusion that they will have to use "helicoils" and if so is this a superior or inferior fix to the original threads??
 
Did you ever consider:

Doing absolutely nothing with them.
They are doing you no harm and will not fail unless you disturb them.
The chances of your needing to take the saucepipe off on the trip are negligible.

That thought had crossed my mind, more than once, but they will need doing eventually and will only get worse as time goes on...................

If they are FUBAR now (or will be when you try to remove them) they will be no worse later 'as time goes on'

Generally speaking, the original threads will probably get damaged,so the holes will the be drilled oversize once the old stud has been drilled out,and a helicoil insert fitted to restore to original size.
Done properly the repair will be stronger than the original thread
 
I can vouch for Recoil inserts..
Previously I had an old aluminium test piece kicking about & I drilled ( battery drill ) a 6x1.0mm & a 8x1.25mm (both popular sizes) then fitted the Recoil inserts, then inserted new bolts & tightened till the bolts broke, the inserts suffered this abuse a few times & although they seemed a little looser after numerous attempts they never came out.

I also retreaded a Bmw cylinder block for a local garage (can't remember the engine model) but apparently Bmw had messed up a run of castings & a few years out of warranty the threads were giving way in the block (expensive) I fitted the inserts & the garage did others after I left & to my knowledge all successful..

So, have faith in them..
