Expensive Electrical fault

Hiya! My 1200 has developed some strange faults, to start the indicators became independent operators which I thought may be a loose connection but I'm advised is a faulty switching unit 230 euro parts only,, then I had a problem when I turned the bike off the tail light stayed burning. A life of it's own, I'm advised the clocks/ instrument cluster is responsible for this cost 760 euro and lastly I couldn't start the bike, problem with the fuel pump reducer cost 120 euro. I'm advised the clock cluster must be replaced new as a used part wouldn't be compatible with another bike, has anyone had similar experience as this or any advice would be appreciated.

If you have faulty switchgear that is causing the indicators to operate, then the same fault is likely be causing your tail ( parking) light to come on when you turn the bike off. Check your manual about how to turn on the parking lights...

The fuel pump relay is a known problem, check out EBay and the For Sale section, spare ones are coming up around the £50 mark ( 60 Euro ish).

I assume yours is out of warranty then ? How old is it ? Has it had the recall work for the fuel pump relay done? These were replaced FOC for a more reliable version.

The instrument cluster module is coded to talk to the main computer on the bike, they are effectively 'paired' to prevent an owner of a high mileage machine putting new instruments on to show a smaller mileage and sell it for more money.

You could possibly fit used instruments to your bike providing your dealer can access them with a GT-1 computer to pair them up and correct the odometer.

Bad news about your wiring, are you sure it isn't a damaged wiring loom rather than the switchgear or instruments?

Independently operating indicators are usually switchgear faults, they are exposed to the elements and the microswitches do not have very robust protection.
There is a thread somewhere about replacing the microswitches inside the switchgear ...

Thankyou all I will investigate further although time is against me and am now considering wether it isn't a good idea to upgrade as the beloved is getting on a bit at 6 years and 60,000 k'.
I commute 50kms daily and find that bus travel confuses the hell out of me, makes me take rash and sometimes foolish decisions but then a newer bike sounds really good, I'm now saying to myself what if the next thing is the servo, ????@&£2""!! Araaaagghh!!!!

It sounds like you have had good use out of your bike, perhaps a trade-in against a newer bike would be the best thing to do given the problems that are arising. I recently traded in my 2004 bike with 40,000 miles on it in mint condition because I wanted a GSA and trade-in values were excellent due to high demand for used bikes from UK going abroad because of the weaker pound sterling.

Thankyou for your input Pukmeister, I must say pies rate very high on my list of culinary treats and another good thing is that I have located a very nice GSA 2008 with only 8500 kms on the clock so will be giving up the bus shortly TG, should be back in the saddle early next week, happy days!!!!!

Well I have finally made a choice after the electrical faults on my 2004 GS drove me to trade up and after test riding a very nice 08 1200GSA I made the mistake of taking the 2010 model DOHC for a test run and was sold immediatly, the engine is so responsive and the sound from the exhaust is soooo very nice and the feeling riding a much newer model, like a tight.
