Expensive Zumo or cheap 2610?

I am a little concerned about the 2610 having a worse screen and with me not using sound also, could this be a little dangerour do you think? ie too much time spent trying to read screen.
I like the pop up idea!
oh, and I dont understand NT?

From what I described what would you reccomend for me to buy? I can afford Zumo but the 2610 is £150 with mounts and wires. Please advise knowledgeble peeps...

Nothing wrong with the 2610 screen. I don't use the voice prompts either and have had no problems viewing directions. Mount the unit how you like, mine is on the handlebars but plenty of other use a MigSel mount which puts the GPS above the clocks, almost in line of sight, so viewing is a quick and simple process.

Only thing with a 'pre-loved' 2610 is that you may not be getting the latest maps (currently City Navigator Europe v.9 according to the Garmin website) so you may need to factor in buying that as well.

If you don't want all the bells and whistles on a Zumo 550 why not consider a Zumo 500 instead? GPSW do them for £300 and then all you need is an SD card to go with it (only UK & Ireland maps are preloaded so the rest of Europe goes on an additional memory card).

Yes the screw pattern is the same. I just un-screwed my 2610 mount and screwed the new zumo mount into place.

True. But the 2720/Zumo screen is a whole lot better. Put the two alongside each other and the 2610 looks very dated.

No experience of Zumo but have used Rider 1, Rider II and 2720. The 2720 is best by a considerable margin.

The ONLY downside is the occasional condensation on the inside of the screen. It's more an irritant than a problem and it's easy to dry it out.

I am not bothered about postcode, battery (whould this be useful on a bike?)
or speed cameras.
I prefer a 2d screen and I am used 100% to not having sound (I use tom tom pda daily, sound bugs me so its off).
This will purely be used for planning ride outs.

In that case, get a Quest 1 from Ebay for £80 and spend the rest on petrol.

The Quest 1 is a good unit, and always in demand.

It would also be okay mounted near the LH bar, but if mounted above the bike's instrument panel - it is a bit of a stretch (and a bit small in screen area) to operate on the move. The Zumo/2610 is better suited to that location.

I would say that if your budget is under £150 - get a S/H 2610 (ensuring that the unlock codes are valid, and it hasn't been stolen )

If you can stretch to £360 - Get a Zumo (remembering that all the mounting hardware is included with the zumo - at least, to mount from the bars)

I know there have been changes but I've also heard that some changes weren't as well received. If my failing memory serves I seem to remember comments on the 2720 about the info tabs on screen being coloured (on the 2610 you can make them transparent) and hence reducing the viewable screen size. This may have been fixed for all I know by now though. I've also heard different opinions about the 2d vs 3d map view, and since Bengaz prefers the 2d view anyway...

Not saying the later screens aren't better but that doesn't make the 2610 screen dangerous which appears to have been one of Bengaz's main concerns.

Bearing all that in mind it strikes me that a Zumo 550 has features that Bengaz won't make use of which is why I suggested a Zumo 500 instead. The alternative is a used 2610, as long as the mapset is up to date.

If it comes with V7 and I want to upgrade to 2008 (latest version) what do I need to make sure the 2610 comes with to allow me top use garmins upgrades free of charge?

Is there a semi-secure mount available for the 2610 to fit the gsa screen, preferably an unobstrusive one?

unless it's brand new, you'll have to pay for an upgrade. as they haven't made them for a while, make sure a second hand one comes with the registration transferred to you to enable you to buy upgrades.


i wouldn't bother with a lockable mount. i'd just get the basic RAM cradle & take it off the bike as necessary.
i've used a 2610 with TT, garmin and RAM mounts & i like the RAM best

If you get a 2610 - don't rush out and pay for updated mapping (£46 springs to mind as the cost) - it will up the price of the 2610 to approaching £200 in all probability (consider a Zumo?)

Try it out and see if you can live with V7/V8 - there really aren't a whole heap of differences in the roads since then, I don't think.

You get the odd roundabout that has now changed to a crossroads, but it's not that bad.
