i had another idea about using the spv range of phones form orange like the spv m1000, but this kept on crashing, so i wouldnt recommend that for a start.
many thanks Paul

I've got the 8130 Pearl and have had no problems apart from a cracked screen which was no doubt my fault:rolleyes:

Good bit of kit.

I've got a Blacberry Pearl 8120, had it for 3 months, after 1 month I also got one for my father (71yrs old) and we both think there great (it's a family business and I won't let him retire ;):D)

Mind you if Nokia hadn't stopped the 6310i and then brought out the worst phone ever, the E50, I proberbly woulnd'nt have bought a Blackberry, thanks Nokia :thumb2

Had a number of Blackberry phones, last one was the pearl. Great devices but it seemed to take over my life :( Always just had to check that last email that came in just in case it was important. Fortunately a good friend :thumb2 pointed out that it was a pain in the asre to everyone around me, was I working or drinking with mates in the pub? Even though I am self employed I binned it and life is better, business hasn't suffered. If you work for someone else it's a very cheap way of keeping you working outside normal hours. :rob If you have to get one turn off the email when your on private time :rob

iPhone

being a macolyte, i'll always be recommending this. I find it brilliant for the bike because it's so multi-functional. If you're touring you can keep an eye on the forums for advice about places, bike issues etc, collect emails, connects almost seamlessly with my Zumo (BT) and autocom meaning I can take calls and listen to whatever playlists I want. But the clincher is the Google mapping making for improvisation on the road when charting GPS courses. Having had a good selection of everything else on offer, it's the daddy of PDA's and phones.

my bad

Hey Kent Oil Head, sorry, it wasn't that clear when I read it back there, but I was talking about the Apple iPhone. I had a Blackberry pearl briefly to try one but didn't get on with it. BTW, the other great function on the iPhone is the weekly weather app., it's accurate 99% of the time meaning you can plan which night of the week you'll go for a blast after work etc. I know it's not available on a business tariff yet, but I wanted it so much, I just went on ahead.

If you want a Blackberry go for the 8310... it's got built in GPS which is better than that fitted to many other phones and I can hook up quicker than my quest

I'm involved with mobile applications so I've been running three sat nav programs on mine Telmap, Telenav and Garmin plus Google Earth.

As a platform for running applications like the one your looking at both Blackberry's are great...

Going to agree with Si - iPhone is the way forward. No GPS (although can triangulate a rough position from phone masts) but so much better user experience than Blackberries I've used. No probs connecting to TomTom Rider & Autocom. Means you don't need to carry an iPod as well.

Worth waiting for a couple of months though - second gen coming soon (probably). Will definitely be 3G and possibly have GPS.

However, take all this with a pinch of salt as my friends accuse me of being Steve Job's catamite due to my love of Macs!

I am just about to get a Palm Treo 750v - a windows based smartphone, -we asked the office for Blackberry's but got a no, - apparently Windows based phones are better! Who knows? -you know what IT departments are like for always having to have the last word!

Don't think an i-phone is an option for business guys, - what do you do when out and about and the battery goes flat, - swop it out? I think not.

Dont go for the Treo's ! Absolute S**t

I work for one of the largest global IT companies & they swapped all our Treo's after complaints..

We now run with the Nokia E61i's.....

I have now got a E61i for work but they will not set the server up to allow us to receive push email from Groupwise so to check email its log onto webmail using the GPRS connection!

Nice phones though. My text messages are getting longer with the proper keyboard. Considering obtaining TomTom and then using Bluetooth GPS for navigation.

Absolutely agree with you. Getting rid of mine was the best thing I have ever done. Mind you, I was working for a firm based in California that would not leave me alone (8 hour time difference).

My role is pushing the sale of applications on to our mobile devices.

Both Blackberry and Windows mobiles devices are great platforms for running applications.

I like the Blackberry 8310 because it’s got the QWERTY keyboard yet it’s small enough to use as a single device… It’s also got as mentioned before a great GPS receiver, the best I’ve come across on a mobile phone and I think even picks up quicker than my Garmin Quest, it also makes a good media/MP3 player.

If you fancy a Windows device I’d check out the XDA Orbit 2

Both of these devices will be run this application.

aha

i think ill begin to look round for a e61 nokia, cheap enough and it will do tom tom if i need it.no great loss if it gets soaked and ruined, it will also run the gs911 diag tool.
thanks Lads, regards PAul

it's not a 'berry but BT are doing deals on similar gadgets i have just got a HTC620 which as far as i can tell does the same things as a blackberry but for a fiver a month
