Right I know that the paralever was fitted to eliminate the suspension jacking up on acceleration, well I think thats right but ...

What I don't really understand is why this happens and how fitting the paralever stops it, is it easy to explain?

With a 1990 Paralever 100 GS would a old style 32 litre tank fit and mono seat straight on, is the rear subframe the one that TT do zega frames for, are the front forks better than the mono's and does it have a top yoke that will easily take bar risers?

You can fit the plastic PD tank and single seat / rack to your 1990 GS. When you talk about the old style 32l tank, are you talking about the old steel PD tank from the mid 1980s? Not sure if that will fit.......but it might as it was used on the basics and I think they had the same main frame as your 1990.

As for the dynamic performance difference between the mono and the paralever there is not a HUGE lot to notice. It is subtle, as the paralever still suffers a little load reversal uopn acceleration. The 'jacking up' effect was never a real problem anyway - it was just a characterisitc of the bikes that you quickly become used to.

I looked at this for an idea, and you'd need to go down the Basic route. G/S subframe and seat . I think that the basic tank fixings are different, but the tank may also differ slightly. The forks are without doubt better and you can fit risers.

The 100GS was only a paralever...........you could buy the PD kit to fit the larger 35 Litre PLASTIC tank, (from the R100GS PD) and single BMW seat to the 100GS

The 32 litre steel BMW Paris Dakar tank was available as a kit to fit to the standard R80G/S monolever of the mid 80s........together with a smart salmon pink single BMW seat.
This seat will only fit the 80G/S monolever.
BMW also made a R80G/S Paris Dakar Bike.

The 32 litre STEEL BMW Paris Dakar tank was fitted to the Kalahari version of the paralever R80GS Basic.....which has, I think, and has already been said, is the same main frame as the R80GS and R100GS. The steel tank will therefore fit the R80GS........but the plastic tank is a better option, (in my view)
The rear subframe on the paralever Bikes is however different from the R80G/S monolever and the single seat which BMW sold for the monolever will NOT fit the paralever. If you want a single seat to fit a paralever Basic with a 32 Litre steel tank HPN make one which uses a cut down Basic seat pan.

The 40mm Marzocchi front forks fitted to the paralever Bikes are acknowledged to be better than the 36mm BMW forks fitted to the monolever G/S.

You gonna buy another proper BWM :)

Well as I have said many times I did really like the PD alot but could only have one bike. Now I haven't got a bike at all and do fancy having an airhead again. I like the Basic / Kalahari for the looks and fact that you have the better bit (suspension and tubeless wheels) of the later bikes with the old motor.
I am not over worried about having a blue frame especially when it adds about £3000 to the price tag. Looking at the 1990 100GS that is in the for sale section it occured to me that I could fiddle about with that, spend £500+ on bits and bobs including a 32 litre tank if I can find one and end up with a bike that suits me but for alot less ££££'s than buying a minty Basic and being afraid to get it dirty
Its also fun just looking, asking questions and learning fings.

as far as I am aware BMW do not make a single seat for either the R80GS Basic OR for the paralever GS when it is fitted with the monolever R80G/S Paris Dakar tank.

If you want a big Tank and single seat on a paralever GS..........go for the R100GSPD with the BMW single seat.

Even the HPN single seat that fits the Basic, (Kalahari), with the 32 Litre big steel tank will not fit the R100GS rear sub frame without some modifications, (which I am not aware of). i.e. there is no single seat that fits on a paralever GS that has been fitted with the Paris Dakar Steel Tank.

Buy a R100GS PD................or if you want the 800cc engine a R80GS

Hope this helps

Ta. I have been pointed in the direction of a flippin lovely 100PD but I don't like that later model with its big cockpit / fairing and bloody awfull paint schemes.

I have had a few 100PDs ......red and white etc., but my favourite Bike was always this one:
