Ok, bike: 2003 R1150GS Adventure twin spark, 94,000mls.

This is driving me nuts! Bike started to feel a bit off, slightly erratic/lumpy start up, then when warm, hesitation on prolonged acceleration. So, I'm thinking coil sticks first.

Obviously it's got to be the one that is starting to show signs of breaking down? No, the one that has always looked perfect had melted at the top! Right, order two new Beru ones from Motorworks cos ones gone so sods law says the other ones gonna go soon!

Now, here's the weird thing. Both new ones in and it's exactly the same, lumpy, but replace right hand side stick with the old one that still works and it runs perfect! I've swapped a few times with exactly the same result so I'm sure it can't be a connection fault. Anybody got any theories on this one apart from it being a faulty new stick?

Just because something is new, doesn't mean it works !

If you're replacing stick with original, then it suggest wiring is ok (although there could be intermittent fault) you could just be unfortunate and have bought faulty coils. It does happen.

Swop the left and right side over and see if the problem moves with the coil sticks .

Yeah, that was the next thing I'm going to try when it stops pissing down! How will I know if or when the problem moves with the coil sticks Neil?

By pulling off the plug caps to the secondary lower plugs so the bike is running using just the main plugs.

If it's only firing on one cylinder i.e. the lefthand side then swop the coil sticks over.
If it then only runs on the righthand side then that's your problem solved.

Thanks Neil, It's not the sticks it seems to be the wiring. (see photo) In the pic #3 hole is missing half of its contact plate and no, it's not still on the old stick. Probably need the kit from Motorworks. Still strange though how it works perfectly with the old stick? :nenau

What about trying to solder a piece of extra wire into pin 3 then cutting it back so that it locates better ?

Yeah, that's what I've sort of done. I got some multi strand wire covered in solder and pushed it into the hole and once plugged back in it seems to be a nice tight fit and the best bit is it works!!!! Although as you said soldering it would be better...but hey, problem identified and fixed, plus I made a spare piece of wire to take with me on my trip.

There was a thread a few years ago where someone replaced the plug with a VW Polo tps plug from a scrapper which was the same but he never said which Polo. Any ideas?

Thanks to Tractors and Neil.

I had the same issue on my Boxer Cup. The old stick may have worked because it had the missing half of the connector on it!

Yes, it did have when the other one melted but I took it of. All is ok now...hopefully! Off to Switzerland on the 26th for a couple of weeks so we'll see. Thanks to all. :thumb
