Extended Warranty - no brainer?

It's such a no-brainer with the Jap manufacturers that I don't even know if they even offer extended warranty.

There would be so little take up of extended warranty that I presume that's why it's not offered.

Thoroughly agree......would never consider it on the jap bikes, although extended warranties are offered at purchase.

Got to consider the risk with the 12GS, risk being the product of likelyhood of failure and cost of repair - I've concluded it's too high for me, so will pay the cash, which is partially offset with the euro cover.

Having had a fortune spent by BMW on warranty work in the bike's first two years I didn't take out an extended warranty for my third year (06 model bought new in November 05). In my fourth year with the bike I've had a new FD as a goodwill gesture (I paid the labour to fit it, BMW provided it) so I'm many hundreds of pounds better off than if I'd bought the warranty. As I normally keep my vehicles for a long time (16 years being the record but that was for a Triumph) I shall be hoping that BMW have paid for the infant mortalities and what has survived so far will last a reasonable time.

I must admit I have had mainly Honda's and never took out an extended warranty. I now have an entended warranty, but recently had a front engine cover replaced on good will but had to pay the labour. I have not used the extended warranty yet, but still time until the end of the year. Peace of mind I guess! When your riding its the last thing in your mind it will break down.

I'm actually surprised that so many people are going for the extended warranty. I didn't on my 05 1200 - mind you they wanted £650 in those days! - needless to say nothing went wrong in that or the next years ownership. I have no intention of extending the warranty of the new one as I reckon its worth a gamble given my own track record with the previous bike

My R1200GS (2005) had 2 years warranty and although a few smallish items were replaced under warranty I decided in July 2007 not to take extended warranty.

Then, two weeks before its 3rd birthday the ABS modulator failed (£1200 parts, £355 labour). BMW did a goodwill thing on the parts, so the cost of labour about equalled the cost of annual extended warranty. So, I was about even.

But this year I decided to take extended warranty at ~ £350. As it includes European recovery etc. I think it it worth it (even if I will have to pay £100 excess).

And I still think it's a great bike - did just under 500 miles in a couple of days in Brittany last week and had an excellent time...

Just got rid of my 08 Guzzi stelvio, piece of Italian garbage, Guzzi wont offer an extended warrenty it'd close them, lol.
Got an 07 GSA, knowing the faults in advance and will get the extended warrenty.
Loving the GS, anyone going on the MCN ride to Wales Sunday, I'll be at the Ponderosa around 11am.

In my first year of extended warranty and so far nothing has gone wrong,except replacement of corroded engine front cover done by BM under good will gesture, but had to pay labour. (Not covered under extended warranty). Having had jap bikes I would never have bothered, but I guess its peace of mind!

If there was a Jap GS

Sure get a Jap bike with no warranty....but it's not the GS. It's the bike I want, so if buying a warranty means I don't need to pay for the engine which just blew up and the clutch that failed then great. If I wanted a Jap bike I'd be riding one. Extended warranty on GS = no-brainer. My GS just sitting in garage crying out for a ride post warranty repair. Just need to get home from this damn month long business trip!

Glad I paid the warranty but actually at £310 per year, it costs more than my house insurance.

Theres probably a few owners on here that own Jap bikes for the long haul and put mega miles on them,but in the bigger picture most jap owners replace them within 2K TO 5K miles so whats the point in an extended warranty if your only keeping it for 6 months in the summer as the second owner.
I'm heading for a 10K yearly mileage on the GSA so the extended warranty makes good sense if I'm keeping the bike longterm.

As I see it many have taken out warranty due to reputation or fear of breakdown/failure but of those of you which have got warranty how many have claimed and what value?

I do own a jap bike (it 3 yrs old 16000 miles) most mileage done in across in Euro land, its only not started on the first push of the button once (regular maintenance) I would (if offered) have taken out ext warranty on this bike.

My dilema is GS (regular mainenance) has failed EWS yet I still believe these bikes are built to last....but the more I hear I question that.?

Had the seals betwixt engine and gearbox replaced once they started leaking, cost is mostly labour, think it was £400-£500. No excess that year, so cost me nothing, although the warranty for that year was particularly expensive, so I lost out overall. Still mulling over whether I want to renew it this year.

approx 350 per year warranty, ave cost of repair? say 500? likely hood of failure over three years ? (twice) calcutations...3x350 1050, 2xrepairs 1000..... or do I take a chance and put faith in the product???

and if it fails twice I'd be selling?? thus warranty will improve sales ptential?

Personally I think all this money spent on these warranties is earning bmw extra cash. for selling bikes with crap parts. On bikes that cost more than my wifes new Mini One Is bloody criminal.My 2nd bike old Honda 1100 Pan 63,000 miles. My mate had it new, If I want to go distance I use this, the GSA only got me to Boston before it conked out. Battery "worn out" ( always on charge when not in use mileage 3960 /57 plate) so the rescue guy said . Ok says my bro which bikes do you pick up the most. Chinese Scoots and new model bms. So on the basis of this info guys and gals warranty well worth the money. Bloody wrong though. Thats one side of the sword the other is lovely bikes if you can live with the faults. I could go on but whats the point.
