Extended Warrentee

Despite two trouble free years I decided to purchase the extended warrantee, in the first year a combination of BMW's goodwill, the extended warrantee and a little luck I managed to spend nothing on the bike except on consumables.

I renewed the policy again this year and in the first month after renewal I managed to avoid another big bill, not directly via the warrantee, but BMW seem to view your commitment to purchase the extension as a commitment to their product and I'm sure my 'loyalty' to them and to the dealer (via full BMW service history) is taken into account when discussing goodwill gestures

I agree with Shep about the loyalty factor.
I have just renewed for the 2nd time 06 bike.
Last year had a new diff unit, tyre, and brake pads under "BMW loyalty"when the rear seal leaked oil again, bill was £1200.
Another thing no one seems to have mentioned is the fact that you get BMW Assistance in the price.
For the piece of mind the whole thing is well worth the £320.
Unfortunately GS's are not bullet proof as BMW try to make us think as this site on the various problems show.They break and are expensive to repair.

In years 4,5 and 6 is there a rising scale of charges or is it one cost covers all?

Also is it transferrable to a new owner?

The bike must be less than 80,000 miles with no rising scale in cost that I'm aware of and it is transferable to another 'private' buyer

Thanks my friend.

The absence of a rising scale (which you get with many other goods) suggests that in general BMW bikes do not wear out very easily (before 80,000 miles), and that occasional breakdown are no more frequent as it gets older.

BTW did anyone mention the breakdown cover.

My old bike had a failed FPC last year in Switzerland. I was towed off the motorway. Myself, my wife AND the two mates travelling with me were put up in a swiss hotel for the night while my bike was left at the nearest BMW dealer to be sorted 1st thing in the morning. I also had a final drive fitted due to pitting under the sane warranty. Think I got my £360 worth

When my (2 year) bike warranty expired in July 2007 I decided not to take out extended warranty on the basis that nothing had gone wrong so far... last June (2008) the central ABS unit failed. Cost of new part £1200 plus labour! Luckily BMW provided the part FOC so I just paid labour of ~ £360 - so I was more or less no worse off than if I had taken out extended warranty. However it did serve as a wakeup call...

I've just bought the Mondial option this month - sort of thinking that maybe something might fail in next 12 months, and also because I'm taking the bike to France and I can get the breakdown assistance as an add on.

We shall see whether it is worth it over the next 12 months, but at least I have some peace of mind.

The extended warranty from Mondial can be bought after the original warranty expires - and their systems are integrated with the BMW service network to some extent so they can see the history of the bike (or at least part of it).

That's interesting ........... all the correspondence I've ever had from Mondial is quite specific to the fact that you cannot extend the warranty after the expiry date of the manufacturers warranty or after the expiry date of the extended warranty

Well they took my money 3 weeks ago... have still to receive the documentation, what with the delay they include to reduce naughty people just signing up when they have a problem... it should become effective 1 August.
