Happy New Year Each! :beerjug:

I'm kinda looking at doing the external fuel filter thing - something to keep me amused for the next few weeks.

Has anybody done this mod and subsequently had problems? It seems like a reasonable idea though the thought of split filters and reduced petrol supply makes me kind of cautious.

Thanks.

i fitted an external filter on mine for a while. location is tricky + i found it very difficult to get the plumbing outside the tank to look acceptable to me.

locating the filter on top left of gearbox (as is popular) you need a 180° bend in one of the feed pipes, which i found was either massively long & untidy, or short & liable to crimping closed.

after close inspection of steptoe's bike, i now know the trick is to aquire another "U" piece as used inside the tank.

make sure you don't use fuel pipe inside the tank that will be affected by petrol, some outer sheaths are.

in the end, i thought bollocks to it, filter only needs changing once in a blue moon & settled for the neater in-tank original fitment.

Leave It

The fuel filter is in the tank for a very good reason, the fuel supply works at about 40 psi so if the filter splits the fuel stays in the tank, the filter only needs changing every 12K miles and you need to clean the sensor contacts anyway at the same time so leave it in the tank.

If your bike is sans-ABS, you can fit it neatly in the place under the tank where the ABS unit would have been. Not quite as convenient as having it totally on the outside, but still much better than having to get into the tank to change it - a real pain the proverbial ... :thumb

if you do have ABS, a neat alternative i considered is to wrap filter in closed cell foam then place in the recess at the rear of the tank above the battery.
