Got my tank off because I thought there maybe some water in it ( and there was ) and at the same time as giving it a clean out I,m going to fit a new filter but have it outside. I,ve ordered the bits and also a metre of petrol pipe and the proper clamps ( as Steppers says you must )

When I bypass the old filter location with a single piece of pipe I was going to use a cable tie inside the tank to tighten the curve of pipe rather than having a big loop as the original piece is preformed in a curved shape.

Question - will a normal plastic cable tie be ok in petrol, it won't melt or anything stupid will it?

Does any of that make sense?

Yes it all makes sense , some plastics will fail when emursed in fuel for long periods , similar thing happened on plastic tank on trailer for a generator . I was given a cable tie and plastic joining piece from a neighbour , it was from vicars tank manufactures it was of a challanger .

The white Zip ties do go yellow and brittle in petrol not sure about any others as the black ones seem they are made from softer plastic, you would be better IMO using small jubilee clips then you know they wont fail. ;)

Yeah I,ve got the proper clips for fitting the pipes, what I wanted to use the clip for was just pulling the petrol pipe back a bit with rather than having it loop out. It's really difficult to explain. Basically I was just needing to know whether a small black cable tie you degrade in petrol or be ok.

Some do, and some don't.

Basically = Very hard to tell just by a question on the internet.

i.e. are my turn-ups too big on my flares ?

Fair enough. I'll fiddle about and see if I can do something.
