I need to back up some home DVDs and it’s a long time since I bought an external hard drive, so I’ve no grasp of current models or suppliers.

Could some kind soul please point me in the direction of a decent current model and a supplier.

Thank you.....:)

staples - sometimes have old stock in the discounted section, the verbatim's are very good and you can do worse than a Seagate

Maplin, Robert Dyas or Amazon

Both Maplin & Robert Dyas stores stock 1-2tb stand-alone drives. Also, Amazon is a good place to check, generally free delivery if you can wait a few days. Have used both Seagate and Verbatim - both plug'n'play but I prefer the Seagate as it powers up / down with the PC to which it's connected. It's not powered from the PC but uses a switching signal from the PC. The Verbatim one is manually switched.

One of my external drives is a Seagate, it came with back up software that works pretty well, you run the software, tell it what folders to back up and away it goes. Mines pretty old now, not even 1Tb but keeps working fine because its not even used once a week

Mind you, on USB 1 it's like trying to pass all the data though the eye of a needle

What about a WD Passport 2.5" USB3 drive?

Ultra-lightweight, good value for the 1TB size, and runs off the USB socket, without any external power source.

Comes with back-up software too.

WD, Seagate, Toshiba USB-powered external drives all cheap and just work in my experience. Convenient not having a power supply to worry about. Haven't bought one in just over six months, so no idea what the sweet spot on capacity/price currently is but they're plenty big. USB3 speeds things up lots, but only worth paying extra for if your computer has it. Backward compatible with USB1/2, so not a problem if the drive has it.
