My birthday is looming (god not another one) and the Mrs wants pressie idea's. Having just got a GS I know they have external star bolts on them which I've never encountered before, I've seen 2 different sized socket sets available 7 piece or 17 piece, but wondered what the general sizes on the bike were, I don't want to end up with sockets I'll never use.

Can anyone advise?

I'm not at home at the moment....but I'm sure the manual gives a list of the sizes needed? :nenau

There are sets advertised for sale on E-bay from time to time, that say they cover the necessary ones...but never had one, or read a review of the quality of them.

I think you actually only really need two or three?

All the tools you will ever need are listed here: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134046

What tools do you need?

I made the following list by trying to adjust/remove/install everything I'd be likely to do to my R1200GS along side the road, or in a campsite or motel parking lot. If you have these tools, you'll be pretty well covered:

* Torx wrenches or sockets in sizes: T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45, T50 and T55.
* Torx E8 (for adjusting the shift lever), E10 (for the handlebar mounts). See trick below.
* Allen wrenches: 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8mm.
* Box wrenches: 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13mm.
* Rachet handle, etc. for the sockets.
* Tools from the stock toolkit as appropriate.

Note: If you don't have the BMW hand guards, then you don't need the T55. You can use the 8mm socket in place of the E10 for the handlebar mount bolts, and if you replace the E8 pinchbolt holding the shift lever on with a hex or Allen head bolt, then you don't need the E8. You can use a 1/4" SAE socket or box end wrench in place of the E-8 -- it fits perfectly!
