Extra fuel tank

Eeek.. Big black tank on the back of the bike exposed to the sun.. Lovely hot fuel in there during the summer... scary to me!!!

That is ignoring my thoughts about getting rear ended!!! Or over filling with the fuel due to the long level tank and getting the petrol dripping onto your rear wheel...

It's scary to me too...plus - it's very ugly...

I think we are in the company of TOURATECH FAN CLUB here,:blast
or is it the sam brown hi viz belt gang.

it does what it was designed to do.

RIDING MOTORBIKES IS DANGEROUS,end of.:nenau

I would'nt ride bikes if I was concerned about getting "rear ended" etc:augie

I imagine that this extra tank would generate quite a bit of extra curiosity at some border crossing points - just because you can open the filler cap and let an eager customs official smell the fuel inside doesn't mean they won't suspect that there might be something else inside. Potentially more trouble than it's worth IMHO.

Errrr wouldn't it be easier to fit an Adventure tank? :nenau They even do them in non-exploding silver :D

A very interesting thread! :) Would be nice to hear how it work in the real world.

Think its a shame that so many people pointed out flaws rather than congratulating someone for having the drive to make somehing themself, rather than buy an off the shelf bolt on part.

Ride safe guys! :beerjug:

Actually I do agree it is nice to see someone make something etc..

BUT not if it puts people in danger. Sadly there are some laws about aux fuel tanks to ensure that you don't wipe out other people...

how heavy would that be?edit, 22kg plus tank,
each to their own i suppose,
me? i cant think where i would go where there arnt petrol stations before 400 miles,
besides my arse needs a rest before then when touring,
i know this solutions cheaper than a touratwat tank but i think id spend the extra and have the weight in a
more manageable place, (not that i could afford one)

Weight?

Weight - well a litre of water weights 1kg so close to that - still less than a pillion passenger though;)

Don't know if this chap frequents the site , but thought you guys might find this interesting ..........

Surprised to see how some people seem to think it dangerous to carry fuel on a motorbike, have a black tank, carry any weight on the back of a bike (pillion or topbox anyone?) or are paranoid about border crossings. As for being ugly - its a GS! And of course it's not like this would be built to comply with the necessary laws or anything

Of course most people do not need such a thing, but it has been built for a specific purpose, which is for competing in long distance rallies, and to have the option of carrying it or not. :beerjug:

Used it for the past few weeks and for the first longish journey last weekend, riding down to Devon and then back via the Winter Challenge Ride. Can't say I notice it is there - is well baffled so fuel does not move about. Reserve light came on at 438 miles but had not filled both tanks right up so should make more.

With both tanks full you leave aux tank off until main tank gets below half, then turn on tap and level rises a little and then goes down very slowly.

Takes less than five minutes to remove (2 bolts, 2 nuts, 1 QR connector) and replace with pillion seat.

Have to say I think it looks smaller in the metal than in the photos! My main concern was being able to get on and off the bike and put the bike onto its centre stand since my leg is much weaker after my accident last year and I cannot really bend my right knee, but have not had a problem so far.

Good on you Grim-rider, I understand peoples negative or rather constructive critism...as weird things can happen!

Have you done any moldings of panels Grim, thinking about doing this one day...

You carry on :thumb Too many mary anns who worry about what things look like, rather than the purpose/function of the item.

The danger warning of a black tank heating up the fuel takes the biscuit.:D

Does he know that the fuel continually circulates around the system and back to the fuel tank getting nice and hot in the process. :blast

Not at all Steve - if I was bothered what other people thought I wouldn't be riding around with it on on the first place :thumb

Cheers Steptoe - bike has never run so well as it has been doing since you laid your hands on it at Evesham :thumb2

As to why I haven't bought a 'proper' GS - well this one isn't quite worn out yet, and having won four national rallies on it, I am kind of attached to it :augie

Nice one Grim, looks good.
i've ony got 33ltrs another few more wouldn't go amiss.:clap
Looks like its going to be even tougher to catch you in the IBR.:)
