Put a lower seat on first (BMW do a lower seat...as do Corbin and Sergeant...I have a Sergeant lower seat and love it)

If thats still no good, put GS suspension and centre stand on it (you can get Hyperpro springs to fit the standard GSA shocks.... and that will lower it another inch or so)

You rode it home, so its not impossible.

Cheaper than shock alteration would be an off-road course like the ones run by I2I in Yorkshire. You'll get much more comfortable balancing the bike and not being worried about 'flat footing' it.

Also, a TT seat is slimmer at the front and could also help. I have a 29" inside leg on a good day, but happily rode two XTZ750s and a DR800 because the seat tapered at the front.

Once you get the hang on mounting/dismounting it's quite easy.

Finally, just get used to the fact that you will sometimes drop it at a stand-still. It's not the end of the world, just step away and let it drop, then pick it up.

I put Hyperpro shorter springs, cut out the seat foam, and after heating the seat base (plastic), squeezed inward the thigh area (it forces you to stay with your legs too open)
 
I for one can empathise with you on this one. When I collected and drove home my GS I thought I had made the biggest mistake of my motorcycling career,I am 5'7" with 28/29" inside leg and I felt very intimidated by it untill the first time I stalled and dropped it- and found that I could actually pick it up myself and I am totally fine with it now and wouldn't have anything else!Just keep an eye on the ground when stopping.Enjoy your new bike it's beautifull and obviously well maintained.
 
Im the other way, Im on a standard GS and find Id like it taller, at 6ft I can get both feet flat on the floor on mine so if anyone is interested we could look at a swap for shocks, centre and side stands. Dont think anything else is needed?

Thanks boxintwins, I'm nearly 100% keeping it. One of my reasons for purchase was the simplicity of maintenance and that is keeping me towards adjusting my riding to the GSA.

Probably wouldnt need spare cash if you sold the original shocks and seat mate, might even have a few quid left over :)

If I did that it would devalue the bike when I came to sell it. So would need to keep originals.
Would like a GS front seat so I can put a rack on the pillion section.
 
Mine felt a bit tall and I'm 6' with fairly long legs... It came with a Tony Archer seat which looks much taller than standard. But when I swapped it for the standard seat that felt much more unwieldy - the TA seat is far narrower and although taller, much easier to get a foot down on (I can just about flat foot both feet) so I'd try narrowing the original seat if I were you... maybe send it to Tony and see what he can do?
