F 800 GS or GS adventure

I think that the above could be a brilliant bike and so I contacted BMW to ask if they knew anything so I could plan my savings /bike purchase plan and this was their reply
I thought I'd share it to save you asking.

Dear Mr Roscoe
Thank you for contacting BMW Motorrad Customer Information.

At this present time we have not had any confirmation from Germany that we will be releasing the F800 in the GS or GS Adventure version. Details of new bikes for 2008 are usually confirmed around the end of the year in time for the MCN Bike Show at the NEC in Birmingham.

We are sure that if you advise your BMW Motorrad Dealership of your interest in this bike they will contact you as soon as Germany release this information, alternatively it will be published on our website at http://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk under the News section.

We are sorry we have been unable to assist you on this occasion, however if we can help in the future please do not hesitate to contact the Customer Information Department using one of the methods shown below.

It's fairly safe to bet that the F800GS will be announced later this year, probably to be seen at one of the motor shows, and in the dealers for spring next year

I was chatting to my Motorrad manager and he was at a seminar recently and the forth-coming 800GS was discussed. He said it was the first time the top brass have confirmed the existance of the 800G and it will be launched in time for the Birmingham show.

Went 2 NEC last yr after having test ride on F800ST and asked top man on BMW stand if there was ever going to be a GS version as had been rumoured in MCN. He said it would never.ever happen so I went and bought 1200 GS as I wanted that style of bike.Now it looks like it will happen after all. Don't believe a word they say!

However, you have to remember that an employee is not always privy to the inner thoughts and workings of a major company. He may have been a 'top man' at the NEC that day, and you have to remember that they'd just released bikes into a market segment that was otherwise missing. Public reaction to the latest model is forefront in their minds, then comes the desires of the public. If no-one had shown interest in a GS version, it may never have been considered.

So would they call the harder core version an "Adventure" model or a "Dakar" model?

I would have thought you could not really call it a "Dakar" if it has 800cc - not with a straight face anyway.

I do like the look of that little sketch though ... looks like a proper world touring bike. An Africa Twin for the 21st century

the dakar name is now nothing more than a marketing tool, however i do wonder what this bike would be like if bmw decided to make a full on competition model, strip it down to the bare minimum,fit it with the latest super light weight parts , and poke the engine with a very sharp stick a la HP2 ? . no doubt if bmw do not do it, someone will . looking forward to it
then again....honda could come out with a new africa twin about a grand or two cheaper and kill it dead, unless bmw make it an absolute stonker of a bike or even ,, gasp !!!!! put a reasonable price on it to begin with . now there,s an idea BMW .
