Thought it was time to replace my knackered phone so I've been out and bought a 16Gb IPhone thing.

I'm trying to get it to join my wireless router but the bloody thing keeps asking for a password instead of the SSID - tried the SSID but it keeps insisting it needs a password. How do you get it to work?

:beerjug:

You need the wireless key for your hub, normally n a stickr on the base...

.from one type of luddite to another...

:rob

It should have detected the SSID automatically, so now needs the password (if you have one set).

There' s no option to set a password in my Router. Our laptops and other devices simply ask for a SSID to be entered once. The IPhone is insistent that it needs a password

At the risk of talking complete BS , I'm sure I entered the WEP code into my iPhone to make it link up (the WEP code is on a sticker on the base of my router).

HTH

I've tried entering the WEP code but the phone just says "incorrect password" - it's gonna be launched out the window if this carries on. I should have known better than to buy an Apple product - we just don't get along.

This is defo the blind leading the blind, but, have you tried your email account password (as in old fashioned POP a/c email, not Hotmail or whatever)?

If that don't work...........sorry :(

This is not the phone at fault here. The iPhone automatically detects networks and you click on the one you want to join. Then you enter the password....but only if its a SECURE network.

If all you enter for your other devices is the SSID and NO password (at first time connecting) then you network is not secure.

Once you have matched any device to a network and stored the password (assuming its secure) then you should not have to enter SSID ever again. In fact, I've never had to manuallly enter the SSID for iPhone, laptop x 2, desktop, XBox, Wii.

It sounds like you need to check out the router's manual and control panel for the settings - that's also where you can find out the network key.

What's the router make and model?

Routers a Belkin one.

I've just plugged my BT home hub in and the IPhones up and running using the SSID on the hubs sticker. Unfortunately our laptops and wireless printer will not work properly with the BTHub

I'm not a techie but my steps would be:

1. Google your exact Belkin model for the URL address. Normally something like http://192.158.1.254.
2. Also Google for the administrator user name and password so you can get in once you've logged on using the above address. Something like "Admin" and "Password". Or the password could be the serial number on the sticker. This is not yet necessarily your network password.
3. Enter URL then username/password if asked.
4. Somewhere under "configure" or "wireless" or "network" will be the current WEP key.

If the WEP field is blank then it's not secure. While the bonnet's on, switch on teh security and make up a key.

Or.....Google for a user manual for the router, probably a little more reliable than me! :aidan

iPhone calls it password but it wants the SSID...Requires the same'password' that you would use to connect your Laptop for example...

apologies if this has been said..its Sunday morning and i had a few last night..did not read quite all the thread:blagblah

IPhones quite happy on the BT Home hub, unfortunately the home hub refuses to talk to the older older laptops and the wireless printer but works fine with my work laptop. The Belkin works fine with all of the older kit and my works laptop but not the IPhone ....

I just need to replace two laptops and a wireless printer and everything will be fine :toungincheek

Don't you just love technology :D

Seriously

I've got some pretty old kit. I'm sure if I bring everything up to date there won't be any issues at all. I've binned the wireless adapter for the printer so I can use it's Ethernet card so that's one down.

Use both Hub and Belkin, connect with an ethernet cable and turn off the ADSL function in whichever one allows you to do so. Different wifi channels obviously!

The BT Home Hub uses the newer 802.11n wifi standard whereas older stuff uses b or g, hence the reason your older laptops and wireless printer won't hook up with the BT Home hub.

As for getting the iPhone hooked up to your belkin, have you tried simply rebooting both of them and starting again?

If it's of any comfort to you Rob.

I've decide against an Iphone.

All the best

Chris

This may be way off the mark but when my laptop wouldn't connect to the wireless router, I finally discovered it was picking up a neighbour's Netgear router instead of mine. I changed the name of my router and all worked OK.
