Hi,

Did you check the fuses?
Sorry for the basic question :augie

Yes all fuses intact, thinking of getting 2nd hand clocks to try on it now, speedo sensor is good , checked all other web sites to no avail.

Hey up Dave
I had similar problem , I lost all mileage and when I turned the bike off the rev counter stayed at 1500 revs so I tryed everything fuses battery etc no joy so I had second hand clocks of ebay and evrything works fine now , but you can try my old clocks if you want I am in Cheshire so let me know cheers Mel

I had this happen on a brand new, day-old, F650GS in June 2001. Different bike, I know, but the problem was exactly as you describe ...

In my case, everything sprang back to life the following morning, but I had the clocks checked out by the Boston dealer when I took it back a few days later for its 600 mile service. Turned out to have been caused by rainwater. I was a bit peeved, but there was no reoccurrence ... until about 18 months later, by which time we had shipped said bike back to the UK. On examining the clocks, the West London dealer found that the electrics were completely corroded ...

All,
After trying Mal's clocks, ( alll be it iw odometer fault this eliminated any other causes as the tacho and speedo worked OK. So I managed to purchase 2nd hand set of clocks from Motorworks.
Interested in why my clocks had failed i took them apart and noticed corrosion between the power pin on the multi connector for the clocks and several of the other pins. This in conjunction with other tell tale signes of water ingress leds me to belive the sealing boot BMW fit does not seal very well and that it takes only a very small amount of moisture accross any of these connector pins to cause problems.
I am guessing that depending on which pins the wayet shorts dictates the level of failure within the unit, In my case total failure but in Mal's case just the odometer faied.
I looked into the PCB on the clocks borrowed from Mal and noticed some corrosion around the plug pins.

I have now gone out of my way to seal the connector boots to the casing and sealed around the edges of the casing its self, being carful to leave a very small gap in sealing to allow for condensation to dissapate, additionally I have inserted a couple of bags of silica gel into the housing to absorb any moisture that may become present.

Thanks for the help Mal.

Regards,
Dave
