just traded my f800 in for a more practical f650gs

the new bikes only done 1,000 miles by former keeper.. . the guy at the dealership never mentioned a run in period, is it past this or should i not be hammering it yet???

500 miles - run in

I got my 800GS when it had 150 miles - so almost new.
Run-in was supposed to be 500 miles.
I was at run-in check at 634 miles.

There will be more quallified answers/opitions from more experienced riders than me, pretty sure about it.

But for the time, this might help you.

The bike needs a good thrashing now before its too late. You dont say how old the bike is so perhaps the previous owner did not ride much and was very gentle. Riding too long at a gentle pace is not good for running in an engine, the bores can glaze over before the rings bed in resulting in high oil consumption.

Well past the run in period, get to around 2000 and it will really loosen up

Ride it like you nicked it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

If it could it would thank you for it.

Or you could check with the dealer and handbook ... either would give you a different view to that above and talk about varying the stresses on both engine and the rest of the bike during the running in period.

Which dealer and hand book are you refering to Ross, My book says gentle use using the gears etc for 500 miles followed by the first service. My local dealer told me do do 400 miles gently followed by a couple of hundred miles of more spirited riding and give it a real good thrash before the first service at 700.
28000 miles now, sweet as ever and uses 0 oil.

When running in, I keep below a set revs for the first 500m, then increase by 500 revs for every further hundred miles. The most important part of running in is to not let it lug/chudder at low revs, just keep it spinning. However, despite the advice on here, don't thrash it. There's plenty of time for that later.

On the assumption that you don't know the history, I'd work my way up from about 6000rpm increasing the revs as you go. Try not to keep at a steady speed. Use the gears, and choose some routes that allow a variety of speeds.

Hi Simmo,

Nice bike :D :D

well the manual says:

The first 1000 Km
• Vary the throttle opening and engine-speed range frequently
• Try to do most of the riding in this period on twisting, fairly hilly roads, avoid high- speed main roads and highways if possible.
• > * Exceeding the specified engine speeds while running in will lead to increased engine wear.
• Keep to the specified engine speeds for running in
• Do not exceed the rpm limits recommended for running in (Running in speed - <5000 min-1)
• No full load acceleration.
• Avoid low engine speeds at full load.
• Do not omit the first inspection 500-1200 KM

as its done 1000 miles which is 1609 KM I would say its run in all ready,
there is no Magic point for running in just common sence and gradual increases :thumb

I would just build it up slowly on what you have and enjoy your Ride :beerjug:
