My July'03 reg F650GS has just completed its first service @ Vines of Guildford. The total cost was £334 which to me seemed excessive. Does this sound right?

Hello Jeremy

No it doesn't sound right but unfortunatly it is about the going rate.

It's something to do with adjusting the valve clearances. I think they have to bring in a Solicitor, Doctor or City Broker to adjust them.

The 650 prior to the fuel injected GS versin needed the valves done at the 12,000 service but the FI model was specified at 6,000. My dealer took the attitiude that since little had actually changed that they would leave this check out at the 6,000 which saved a decent amount of wedge and cost only £127.

Thanks to all. Started saving for the next one.

Fraid i don't agree with you there. All the 650's have to have the valves checked at 6k. The earlier bikes had the valve clearances reduced to 0.10 to 0.15mm inlet & exhaust (carb version) and subsequently adjustment after that rarely needed doing.
The fuel injection version however is a different kettle of fish and does require checking every 6k.On model build from 2002 onwards the valves are not checked at 1st service but are at the 6k and invariably need adjusting, inlet 0.05-0.10 ex 0.15-0.20mm.
Service schedules are there for a reason ignore them at your peril.
Had some pretty poor running 650's in the past and this was usually done to basic engine settings ie valve clearnces
