Hi
I,m thinking of changing the gearing for a long European trip in may and have seen that a few people have fitted a 17 tooth front to help with vibes at cruising speed rev,s . am just looking for opinions from anyone who has done or tried this , thinking back to my old racing days one tooth up on the front equates to approx. 2.5 off the rear from what I remember .. just seemed a lot and also wondered why people didn't go the smaller rear route as space looks tight behind the chain cover .
Thanks in advance
Wayne

17 tooth gearbox sprocket fitted to my 2008 F800GS ... much smoother at motorway speeds and no noticeable difference at lower speeds, around town, or up the Stella Alpina :thumb

+1

Makes the whole thing a bit more relaxed to ride. Definitely worth doing :):)

It's probably because the front sprocket from an F650 goes straight on and does what you want. Maybe industry has caught up, but when I did mine, nobody did alternate sizes.

While Not Wishing to Rain on the parade...

I have previously posted the following on a previous thread:

Nice idea, But...
I too, put a 17tooth front sprocket on my '08 F8GS when replacing the chain and it did, indeed, make a good bike feel that bit nicer, but - the 500 rev drop at touring speeds put the revs right at the point of maximum vibration and my hand went numb in about 25 miles. Not great when starting a two week jaunt to the further reaches of Scotland when you live in Essex. The extra vibes caused problems with my hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder and I was warned by my osteopath that I was risking permanent nerve damage
So I swapped back to the 16tooth pinion and all the problems went away
The other thing is that I was, and am, getting 58 mpg on my daily commute into central London and the extra tooth didn't change that. Now while I'm not saying you shouldn't make the change for me I don't see the point; and having been to Berlin and back last September with a bunch of mates the bike stomped down the French and German motorways at 90 and didn't feel any busier than my old 1150GS ever did; and still gave me better mpg than both the 1100 Pan Euro & the Triumph Trophy.
Sorry if that sounds negative but a nice change in one area can have a number of side effects that aren't so nice.

Another :thumb2 for the 17 tooth conversion. Easier on the motorway, no difference noticeable difference round town. Cant say I have noticed any vibration or numb hands either.

I went from 16 to 17 tooth, it worked for me. Moved vibes away from normal touring rev band. Trips to Germany etc., very happy with results.

Not sure what I've done wrong, but I ordered a 17 tooth from Motorworks, and it wouldn't fit on the F800GS (2010), didn't leave enough room...

Thanks for the replies so far guys .
@Bobbsy I have heard that its a bit of a tight fit .
I think for the sake of £20 ish I,ll get one and give it a try
Cheers

Yes, I was pretty surprised as ordered after reading about it on here - was replacing chain and rear sprocket also during a service so was having it all done at the same time, but mechanic wouldn't leave the 17 tooth on the bike as was too tight in his opinion. DID heavy duty chain.

It was part number TRA08480 that I had ordered, 17 tooth front sprocket to fit F650GS twin 08, F700GS. Does anyone know if that was the correct or incorrect sprocket to order?

Hi Guys
I ordered one today from Motorworks along with a few other nits .
@Bobbsy I asked him to check the part numbers above in the thread and he confirmed that this is the right part numbers . although not listed for the 800 (listed for the 650 and 700) .
having read elsewhere it is by all accounts a Tight fit .
It should be here tomorrow .. so I,ll let you know how I get on with the fitment :beerjug:

Update , Frt sprocket fitted no problems , very straight forward , not as tight as I expected @ Bobbsy ... hope this helps
