Off on a trip out for the weekend, happily buzzing along at 70mph and had full engine stop? Managed to get onto the hard shoulder and to safety but at a total loss at what to do now!

Bike turns over but not firing, no warning lights, full of correct fuel.

Got rescued and got the bike home, took the air filter off and sprayed easy start into the box and it fired up, so its not the electrics to the spark plugs.

Disconnected the main fuel line from the pump under the seat and turned it over, no fuel spurting out?

Checked the terminals to the 'thing' on top of the fuel chamber and have 10v when the button is pressed.

My question is, do you think it is the fuel pump, fuel sensor, a fuse somewhere, or anything else?

Any advise welcome!

Thanks in advance.

Ant

Sounds like fuel pump if it's not squirting. (dont know if it has a seperate fuse.....you'll have to RTFM for that)

Can you hear it when you put ignition on?

I've not worked on an 800 apart from to fix punctures, but it ought to be fairly easy to remove the pump and bench test it :nenau

Don't automatically go for an expensive OEM replacement if it is the pump BTW........there will almost certainly be FAR cheaper options of similar quality :thumb2

There are no fuses - ZFE / canbus system. Fuel pump easy to remove. There was a recent thread about someone finding a replacement....

Hi, thanks.

No, I can't hear a pump running when the ignition is on or when the button is pressed!

Do I have to unscrew the (approx) 100mm galv ring under the seat to get to the pump?

I have read somewhere about fuel pump sensors going faulty, Is this something I should look at?

Steve, just trying to determine what is wrong before running it in to diagnostics! But if it comes to it, then that is my next call. It is a lot of hassle though handling a non running big bike, and I don't think anybody does house calls??

Thanks again

Hi Steve K

Thats very good of you to offer your services.

To be honest, I can get a van and don't mind a ride out to Hull if you could help me? I am OK with the usual maintenance stuff but this is a bit out of my league!

Please contact me either on the open forum or by PM if the offer still stands?

I will of course pay you for the parts and labour.

Cheers

Hi Ant
You did not say (or I did not see!) what your fuel level was at the time ie were you low on fuel say only 5 litres or less? Or less than 50 mile showing?

Mine did exactly the same on the motorway. There is a one way valve on the breather from the top of the tank which blocked. Will the bike run with the filler cap open? It took quite a bit of priming through before it started.

Hi yes offer stands if you can get it here I can read the codes for you no problem no parts required just to read the errors try the suggestion above leave the filler cap open as it might save you a trip.
Another option is if you send me a deposit to cover the GS911 I can post it to you to use and refund you upon return you will need a windows laptop
this way you can have it for a couple of weeks

Thanks everybody for their help!

After a lot of head scratching and borrowing donor parts off my mates 800GS I have finally sorted it.

It was a faulty fuel pump voltage regulator…. Since finding the fault and reading about them it is a very common fault on the earlier bikes (full BMW range) as water collects under the rubber cover under the seat on the 800 (elsewhere on other bikes) and finally gets into the voltage regulator.

Anyway, a quick fix to get you out of trouble is to bypass this device completely and it should work, enough to get you home or to a BMW service centre at least.

Thanks again lads

Is this still an issue with the later 13> F8GS's ? or have they revised the design?

Hi Siparry,

What I have read, it was only the early GS's that had this problem as the water gathers in the chamber under the seat with nowhere for it to go, hence working its way into the fuel pump EPC. Since then (2008-09) they have provided an outlet!

Just another quick note to remember, BMW wanted around £95.00 + vat for the part but I was unofficially directed to www.motorworks.co.uk which cost me £35.00 inclusive of vat and delivery, guaranteed for 6 months, In my opinion, bargain! Very helpful staff and I would certainly recommend!
Got the part today, fitted and running a treat!

Cheers
