I think Chas is referring to the new 800, which is a 900. Rather than the older one which is an 800. Not to be confused with the 750 which is an 850, the 700 which is an 800, or indeed the 650 which is an 800. I always referred to my 650 as an F650, many thought I meant the other F650, which was actually a 650, but a single.
I'll get me coat.
Only BMW could be so stupid as to give two entirely different bikes the same model designation thus ensuring perpetual confusion and ambiguous internet search results.

Assuming I wasn’t looking at a scooter, if I was looking for a bike to commute on, or as a bit of fun or as a real alternative to the 1600, I’d look no further than a Royal Enfield.
Why?
The bikes are cheap. You could buy a new one and come away with change from what you’d probably pay, even for an ex-demo or secondhand BMW or scooter. Even more if you found an ex-demo Royal Enfield.
They go well enough to get you from A to B to C.
There is enough difference between the models, enabling the rider to chose the bike they liked the most.
For you, there is a very good dealership, straight down the A12 at Newbury Park. They’ll willingly lend you a loan bike for you to get to Chelmsford / London and / or there is an easy walk to the Central Line station, straight into the City.
Not to put a dampener on ChasMill’s enjoyment, but….
I owned the F800R and really liked it, once I’d had the suspension changed by MCT. I then owned an 850 GSA, which was a very good bike….. but….. after a while, I found it ‘Just to good’ in that it was near enough flawless. I am not usually one to credit inanimate objects with human qualities but it was soulless, just ‘Too good’ at what it did. I sold it, putting the money into a savings account, from which I bought (with a lot left over) my 410 Himalayan. That at least had soul.
