F800gsa chain

Anybody any experience with these chains? Or gs800? My gsa800 has almost eaten its chain at 9400 Kim's adjustment nearly used up and chain can lift off sprocket. I never seen such wear on a chain even on more powerful bikes fazer1000 capponord trophy 1200 bandit 1200 all lasted much longer. I could go weeks without adjusting the chains on these but I'm adjusting the 800s every 2nd day. I have a Scott oiler as well. Is there a problem with these chains? I need to replace it but I am reluctant to buy a bmw one if the wear is typical. JJH

Is your wheel sprocket aligned with the gearbox sprocket?

Not sure whether there's much difference between the F700 and F800 chains but checked mine yesterday and it's fooked after 5k miles... going to go see the dealer on Saturday to have a moan as it should last longer than 18 months / 5k miles IMHO.

Is it possible that the rear wheel isn't straight - ie the adjuster marks are the same on both swinging arms?

You need a new 525 chain. I'd also use a rivet link on this application. Plenty of stock of orange 525 X-ring chains!

This is really odd.
I got over 40,000kms trouble free out of my original chain. Nothing special, lubed it every 1,000kms or so. It still had life left in it but was getting a few tight spots and I changed it for preventative maintenance. The only time I ever adjusted was about 3 times outside of having to adjust it every time the bike went in for service (dealer service is obligatory where I live in order to keep the warranty valid) because the dealer had it adjusted way too tight.
What I found was getting correct adjustment was a pain in the arse at first. If you adjust it with correct slack, once you have retorqued the axle nut, the adjustment will be far too tight, like a bow string. I have a feeling this is what the dealer was always doing. They finally got my message to stop screwing with the chain. I found the OEM chain to be quite good, in fact I bought another one due to lack of a decent o-ring chain being locally available and then requiring the purchase of a chain tool (I had a breaker but not a pin setter), only one adjustment in 15,000kms has been required and I am no where near meticulous with chain maintenance.

My sprockets wear before the chains. Asides the original CZ chains failing there's not been much talk of chain failure since...

Rusty? Have you been on salted roads?

My experience with winter and salt is that a chain never survives a salty winter. I use to ride all winter and always have to replace the chain in the spring. low or high milage on the chain. I have tried different brands and qualities, resut is the same.

Yes I have ridden on salted roads but this last winter was the mildest I can remember in a long time and with a Scott oiler it should last longer than this. I am doing the same journey the last 15 years on aprox 10 different bikes and never seen a chain wear out so fast. JJH

My 650GS twin is still on the original chain, using scott oiler. usually adjust once between services. Ridden all weathers and now on 15k miles. Its known that early chains were not good, but latter bikes appear to be generally ok. maybe you got an early chain or a faulty one.

All I can say for now is I'll let the dealer have a look and see what he says about warranty. Again thanks for your repleys how can 1 chain be worn out at less than 6000 miles and another last 3 or 4 times that? I know there are variables but one would expect a difference of about 10 or 20 % not what I'm getting. The only other thing is that I bought it as a dealer demo with 3000 km on it maybe the damage was done then although I doubt it. We will see and I will keep you posted. JJH
