I'm musing about getting an F900XR with luggage etc.
Presently got a 1250GS.
Any comments/knowledge would be gratefully received. Ta

My 1250 GS was in for service and I had a courtesy bike yesterday - not an XR but a GSA (900) so can’t comment on comfort but the engine was night and day (poorer) than 350cc would suggest. That alone would put me off if coming from a 1250.

This is part of the problem. Do I lose the extra power and put up with it? Or press on with the 1250? I don't want to get a 1300gs as I'm getting older and may well desire something lighter in time to come, and want to buy something I can keep at least 5 years like the 1250.
Also, crazy as it seems: going back to a chain after years not having to worry about lube and tensioning.

I’ve gone a slightly different way. R1200gs to Super Tenere now a Tiger 900 Rally Pro. The RP is 63kg lighter than the S10. It does have a chain but I don’t have BMW final drive letting me down in the middle of France fears now.
It’s coming up 3 years old now and has about 15000 miles on. The chain it came with was pretty cheap crap so I replaced it with a DID gold X ring and haven’t adjusted it since. I do really clean the chain much, just the usual quick wash and lube. I try to remember to lube it at the end of each day when touring but sometimes the bar is calling louder than the chain. My brother has a 900XR and seems to like it, well he’s kept it a long time for him.

I know they now do a low maintenance chain which can go 000’s of miles. To be clearer on the point about the engine- it’s obviously a different configuration rather than just a lower cubic capacity and was quite vibey at low revs when twisting the throttle.
In its favour, based on what you’ve said re manageability- it feels very light indeed when compared to the 1250 (the 900XR and 900GS weigh the same).

In the last month I’ve rented a newish 1250GSA and a brand new 900GSA, and did about 250 miles on each .
I’d take the 900 motor over the 1250.
Much smoother with a great quick shifter . The 1250 was rattly and the gear box was a bit crap , as was the GSAP, the P standing for Prod, as it needed a big one to change gear .
The 900 had plenty of grunt . Anybody who says they need more is deluded .

Gentlemen, I thank you for your words of wisdom. The thought of a 1300gs is not something I personally relish due to my comments above, AND, the spiralling costs to buy. Also, I checked one out previously and it did nothing for me. I'll check out the 900XR when I'm able to get to Wollaston, so if I change you might see the 1250 in the for sale section. Thank you.

Or maybe they just have a different opinion.

I really wouldn't get hung up on chains.....my Africa Twin has c 36k miles now and the 2nd chain and sprockets are fine. A 30 second squirt with a bit of lube every now and then (more if it's been wet), and a very occasional 5 minute re-tension. For me, it's a non issue.

I considered one a while ago after having one as a service loaner, maybe 2022. I wasn't offered enough in part ex on my S1000XR to tempt me. I took the S1000XR on one last long trip to the Pyrenees then sold it not long after as part of my downsizing plan for retirement.
I still have an R1200RS and will be taking that to Spain in May. This bike will be 9 years old by then and the semi-sporting riding crouch is no longer great for my wonky joints. The F900XR would be on the list of potential replacements but in the last few years some really good alternatives are on the market, such as the new Tiger 800 Sport.
