Facelifting a 1998 1100 GS.

A sharp tap square on the bolt head with a 1lb hammer for the ones that aren't rounded. If that doesn't work an electric heat gun to heat the alloy and possibly thread seal as well. I think that you need to get to about 120ºC to soften the blue thread seal. If necessary drill the head off the rounded bolt but I note that you called these Allen bolts. The originals are star drive Torx head bolts and it is easy to use one bit too small and think that you've got the correct size:blast DAMHIK

Remember that any thread originally dry should have the torque setting reduced by ~25% if re-assembled with Alu-Slip or Copper-Slip.

Definitely Allen bolts but originals may have been replaced at some point.

Heat gun is on order so we'll see, hope for the best. Aware of the need to reduce torque, thanks anyway, assume nothing!

Todays puzzle - how to remove the footrest pivot pins? Split pin out, washer off, tap gently (front) until flush then tap one of the new ones in from the bottom to drive the old one out keeping the spring in place. Then tap new one in from the top. However can't get the old one to budge much past flush.

Rear won't move at all. Clymer just says remove pivot pins, so far as I can see. What am I missing?

Have to suspend operations until this evening, duty calls.

I just realised that yours is an 1100 so no surprise on the Allen head bolts, the Torx came later.

The footrests are I believe the same though and it will probably just be wear and corrosion on the peg pivot pins. I took the pins right out on mine as I was fitting different pegs, the springs aren't too difficult to work with.

No further forward with these, definitely not corrosion. Front ones are clean and will move freely up and down about 1/4", almost as if there's a step there. Rears are immovable and rotate with the rubber foot peg. 2 lb. hammer just makes them sneer. Seem to be locked together. Clymer no help here.

Anybody?

Well, I had a similar problem. Brought it to a mate of mine and he put it in a big vice and tapped it out slowly using some form of tool that was just slightly smaller than the pin. Took him an hour but it did come out. Mine was complicated by the fact that the pin was bent!

Did you sort the panniers?

Not yet but I will do. Spreading my money around between the GS, F650, R60/7 and my returned to the fold Harley. Then there's the shooting, fishing and last but not least, beer. Oh, and my younger daughter's wedding in October.

Right, it's Friday - off for some beer!:beerjug:
