fackin fuel strips gone again

This was also a nice statement from BMW UK:

=============================

Thank you for your further email dated September 8, 2014, in relation to the fuel level system on your BMW R 1200 GS Adventure.

I appreciate that you are requesting goodwill towards the issue with your fuel level system. Having reviewed this case thoroughly, it is with regret that we are unable to provide financial assistance on this occasion, due to age and purchase history.

I acknowledge that you feel this is a common fault however, BMW UK collates failure reports, part order information and customer feedback to determine if there is an inherent failure with a specific component. I have checked our records and found that the issue you mention has not been highlighted as a common issue. No remedial action has, therefore, been issued in the form of a recall or quality enhancement to be carried out free of charge. I can assure you that safety is considered paramount at BMW UK and if this had been the case we would have recalled all relevant vehicles for a repair free of charge.

In closing, I am sorry to learn that this matter has caused you to contact us. I trust that this has clarified our position. Please feel free to contact me, should you have any future queries.

Yours sincerely

BMW UK

No surprise there then! I wonder how many people have not had a fuel strip/sender failure?

Well @ least I now know how much to budget for a new fuel strip when I have mine replaced in the spring......what a bargain price for something that's khak!!!!

I remember when all the 1200s with a silver FPC were recalled for an updated black jobbie, yet my old bike (55 plate) despite having a silver FPC wasn't included.
So I went to Woolastons to argue the toss, but they were having none of it.

I told them I would buy a spare as mine was a ticking time bomb, and as I handed over £70 quid for this bit of tat, asked how they justify the price?

He sat there in his blue shirt & looked at me with the cold eyes of a Great White and said "BMW only have a tiny supply as they hardly ever fail" :blast:banghead:

It's funny how BMW also use strange size bearings on the swing arm. Non standard "tiny supply" so more money. To be fair the costs isn't silly for that bearing but why use a special in the first place. More cost for BMW more costs for us and no benefit for either.

Back on thread -
I'm getting a Givi mini gerry can (2.5 litres) to slot behind the right hand pannier frame. Shame it's not 4 or five litres. I've got a big fuel tank so don't fill very often and its all too easy to leave it too long. The last fill was 35.3 litres over 320 miles. Talk about running on fumes. The previous fill was in the mid 20's because I'd done more long runs with more miles per gallon.

I filled up again at the weekend, put in 34.5 litres, range told me I had 12 miles to go, 337 miles, after it reset iIself to show a full tank and a range of 330 miles, really baffling how last week it went working.
It's still going in to be checked next week though.

Just zap it. No worries if the zapper fooks it, but you can cancel the visit if it returns to good health.

Erm, I think I just said it's working alright again,

Fuel strip packed up again on my first day in Iceland, it's still under warranty from the last one I paid for last year. This will now be strip number 10 I think. (Losing count now)
Will be booking it in again when the bike arrives home again.

If one of the fuel strips actually lasts longer than the warranty and then dies, it might be time to convert to the 2010 - 2012 float sending unit.
