Farkle development including the front crud

Thanks. I'm looking for bars - not keen on the BMW ones too pricey, like the SW's and the TT bars. The Hepco ones look ok, I'll go look at these... Unless any one has any other suggestions other suggestions.

May make my own...

May be I should start a new thread .......

I'll have to find out which ones I've got - they are very nice indeed, well made and the finish is brill. I'll try to find out for you and let you know, they really are very good - just wish I knew what they were!

Touratech!

But to be fair to TT they are possibly the best example I have yet seen :bow

Cheers Mark..... I like the TT ones too but as you well know, they charge a lot for some bent bits of tube....:thumb

Yeah I know and I oh sooooo totally agree - what grips me is the terrible customer focus and the bizarre delivery lead times (I make to order and I still beat the pants off their mass manufacturing) but nonetheless and to always try to be fair the bars are very nice and TBH and with what tiny amount of integrity I may have (and its not a lot) I suspect that the engine bars do seem quite worth the princely sum charged. Not sure if I can say the same for some of their other gear but I must speak well of these bars - they are very nice.

Anyway whatever you do I am sure will be fine and I wish you all the best for finding what you want at the price you are happy to pay :thumb

Mark,

Are you happy with the welds on your engine bars?

I know nothing, but they do look like I did them...

Got to agree with you there mark. The attitude of we will take your money but we will tell you when we will deliver rather than >>>er sorry out of stock ,we will give you as shout when we have some >if you like to order or leave a deposit. your choice .
I ended up buying the bmw ones.
So how's the bling front deflector coming on ?

Hi pal - I only managed to get the first prototype done however I'm going into work tmoz to try and make the next one, if I do get it done I will post it on the forum :thumb

And re the weld I'm off to look now and will report back later!

Too much red wine last night, I really don't know why it sprang to mind!

God yeah - what a day- amongst many other things including computers crashing Internet failing :blagblah:blagblah I managed to get hold of my laser engineer - the older machine was overheating and had been doing all week - so we needed him in. He finally turned up in his Brabus Merc (yes you read that right- laser engineers are special people) and the bloody machine worked fine - I still have to pay him a kings ransome anyway but that was a bugger.

Add onto that I had to restore some payroll and accounts software to a standby computer only to find out that my lovely Kathryn hadn't backed up the data files :blast

And it's all needed for Monday for wages etc so I can go to London for a couple of days to see my daughter:clap

So yes last night I got home and worked very hard to try to hurt myself as quickly and as deeply as possible and if my hangover this morning is anything to go by I did a very good job!

Will report on the welding shortly.........

Mark,

Are you happy with the welds on your engine bars?

I know nothing, but they do look like I did them...

The bars are stainless steel and the welding is Mig (with stainless wire of course - possibly 0.8or 1mm wire).

I suspect Mig has been used to achieve maximum penetration of weld as opposed to, say, the gentle art of tig (but you can still get penetration of course).

The integrity of the bars relies on, I further suspect, their strength, the correct torque on the fasteners and the welds themselves.

Although some of the weld looks not as well finished as some other runs I must say that Mig, especially using stainless - a very hard to work medium - is brutal compared to tig work and consequently the runs can be imperfect even with a good welder doing them. The welds reveal penetration and its not a 'cold' weld I.e. it doesn't 'sit' on top of the bars nor does it look like 'bird sh*t (another indication of poor welding).

So in my very humble opinion I would agree that some of the runs are less than perfect however I think the reasons why are fully acceptable. I'm pleased to see that the integrity of the weld has not been compromised by grinding flush. In my further humble opinion I personally find the welding very acceptable but of course respect any ones opinion. I employ some very good welders and I wouldn't expect much better if at all from working with stainless as from personal experience it's a pig to work with - which is why I use it:roll

With you being a perfectionist I expected such a comprehensive explanation. I will pop up some time next week to pick up my pannier racks and my other bit of bling, if it is ready.

panneir racks are done mate but deflector im hoping to make tmoz - do you want a black one if so it wont be ready for a few days........ mebbe Thursday?

A day with Mark

I like the blue as well.:beerjug: It's the same as on the S1000RR:rob

I will start with saying that I don't post very often on here but today I went to mark hootons workshop to help with some development for a horn bracket for the K1600GT

mark posted a request to ask if anyone would care to drop in with a bike to measure up for the bracket and I duly replied.

mark can make a good cup of coffee but is shy with the sugar and to be honest with the coffee:D as in he only made me two however working in engineering myself I have an appreciation of whats involved and the level of work required to make these parts - the level of machinery and the standard of the workshop is more than evident in the items mark produces - I found it to be a tidy shop up to date machinery and I`ve never seen likes of the laser machine he has got in work as you can see from the attached image which is a bicycle on the end of my finger and it will also cut 1 piece up to 16mm thick by 3000x1500mm

All in all hospitality, congeniality has been unprecedented in my opinion.

And to all the water cooled knockers mark has had to take time out to work on a proper bike :thumb

if your eyes are good enough you will know its me when I pass you :D if you can read this!

But all in all it was a good day with mark and hes a proper smart bloke :thumb

And just so you know!

And just so you know what I was doing when I really should have been making front deflectors for benhur, nuttygser and that bugger Lister from Wakefield - I needed to design and make a bracket to allow a Nautilus MSX Horn to be fitted within a very restricted place on the K1600GT.

Us real men on our real bikes don`t have this problem as there is an abundance of space!

Front deflector

To all the kindly folk who have been pushing me here`s my take on a farkled front deflector - modelled very strongly on the oem part but of course made out of lovely stainless - so it may last longer than the plaggy one!

Comes in black and as a pathetic excuse for the `logo` (and I honestly don`t know why, people have said I need therapy) I thought to myself well, Nutty can have a blank one of course and benhur can have a black one but it still looks too plain to me............"

So, the phrase `Trojan, the condom of Sparta` popped into my head and lo a logo was born! (I apologise once again, working too hard, low I.Q. and a very strange sense of humour).

btw it fits lovely :bounce1

Looks good. If you really want to put a logo on, how about the one world one GS bike (map of the world, shaped like a GS)?
