I am looking at visiting Limoges for a few days in a couple of weeks time on my bike, any idea on the fastest way down to there and which port to goto?

Thanks in advance.

Rednal => Motorway => Chunnel train thing => Motorway => Limoges

If you really want to go by boat...... Do you want to go over night? If so, to St Malo, then motorway..... or Caen, then motorway..... Don't go to Cherbourg.

I went there last year,
Worcester M5-Swindon M4-A34 Portsmouth.
Le Harvre-Tours- Limoges.600 miles. and a very pleasent ride.:thumb2
Shorter distance, slightly longer in time but i hate the M25 and Dover/Calais.
I enjoy the rest and lunch on the Portsmouth crossing.
Hope you enjoy, which ever route you take.

A jet airplane, followed by a free fall parachute descent . Obviously.:)

It's quite a lot longer to Caen from Portsmouth - especially as the ferry is usually a conventional one as opposed to a high speed catamaran on the Cherbourg run. I would guess the difference in riding time between the two ports to Limoges is only about half an hour

Thanks for that, i don't fancy the boat over night to be fair.

I'm over there to view some properties in the local area and I've arranged some viewings. Owning our own B&B and and setting up a camping area with all our animals onsite has been our dreams for a very long time.

I live just south of Limoges and the quickest route from the French Ferry ports has to be.

From Le-Havre (LD-Lines - get a 10% discount with LD-Lines by booking through here) takes me approx 6 hours with fuel and coffee stops. :blagblah

Get off Ferry at about 08:30 follow traffic through customs and out of the port onto a roundabout. Take 2nd exit off roundabout stay on the outside as the road is a duel carriageway (not many people realise that and queue up) take the next Right after the roundabout and follow this road onto the A131 (stay left as the road has underpass tunnels at the junctions which pass the traffic lights and get you through without stopping)

Stay on the A131 following signs for Paris over a toll bridge (Bikes free) come off the bridge and follow the road to the Left - stay on the A131 which becomes the A13.

A13 to Jct19 near Louviers (Small toll) 2.70€
A13 Jct19 - on to N154 towards Evreux/Nonancourt/Dreux/Chartres/Orleans Stay on the N154 and at Allaines - Mervilliers you will merge onto the A10 (toll road - Take a ticket)

Follow the A10 to Orleans where you will merge onto the A71 signed to Toulouse

Stay on the A71 to Vierzon A71 Jct5 (pay your toll you will need that ticket approx 8€)

At A71 Jct5 Vierzon join the A20 signed to Toulouse/Chateauroux/Limoges

Just read again that you don't want to do an over night ferry, so if you do the chunnel just head out on the Moterway (paege) to Rouen til you pick up the A13 then crack on with the route above, again I have done it a fare few times.

if you get time call in for a Coffee/Tea the kettle is always on and be happy to advise on buying in France (Limousin) region plus the pit falls of moving lock stock and smoking bikes ;) :beerjug:

I've done this for the past two years. Six hours from ferry/tunnel in Calais, via Rouen. Aurotoute Calais-Rouen, then down through Dreux, Chartres to another autoroute, then all the way. The N roads down from Rouen are not especially exciting, but are fast. Soem very enticing straights...

Break in the autoroute and cutting the corner (to the south and east) around Rouen makes it more enjoyable and gived you the option of finding a decent town or village for a proper restaurant. Lyons La Foret being my favoured choice.

Thanks for all the replies appreciate it. Anyone know of any decent but cheap B&B's in the Limoges area ?

How far from Limoges and N, S, E or W ? we are just off J43 of the A20 Treignac.

There is also a Bikers B&B in Abusson East of Limoges on the N141

Thanks for the info, have emailed a few already. I am planning on going down on the 27th Jan 2012.
