I filled my 1150 to the brim today (first time its been FULL for a while) but the fuel guage LCD thing still read 2 bars from top. I really couldn't fit more fuel in. While riding up to aviemore the guage ro to one bar from top but then dropped (as i had used the fuel in the tank)
Can the sensor for fuel level stick?
Any other ideas?

cheers

Mike

PS Nearly no other bikers waved today:(

Someone on a yellow 1150 did though. Cheers:)

A lightweight black plastic piece floats in the tank maybe? :augie

Me thinks the floating part of the gauge is gotten off somehow. Normal fault is that the floating piece gets stuck/blocked on the upper tank (coz of tank curve), but this means it shows the tank is always full.

Your's shows it is emty, so I guess the floater doesn't support the gauge (it's "broken" off) and the gauge stays in the bottom position.

Nothing much else to go wrong there, it's a very simple system.

If you can't live with it remove the fuel pump assembly to inspect it. Make sure to replace the main seal too as BM specifies it.

Haynes or Clymer manual comes in handy doing the work on your own :thumb2 OR go to the BM service (£££+)

Aah, maybe I understood it wrong - you mean it shows 8 bars?

If so then all is allright, the floater can't rise beyond the upper curve in the tank - it's "normal" on some R11xxGS tanks.

I had to bend (it all sits on a solid wire you can bend) the gauge a bit inside the tank to get the floater moving past the upper curve of the tank to make it show full 10 bars when fully tanked, but otherwise it indicated max 8 bars, too.

Did you have it on the centre stand? If so it will drop 2 or 3 bars.

Tisklonaut - It was only reading 8 bars.
Seems to have sorted its self out now, if it keeps happening I may get a haynes manual and try taking it out.

Cheers for the quick help guys!!

Caould be gunge on the rheostat. Mine suddenly stopped using the top bar, but wasn't gunge. I don't bother - it takes fuel from the bottom of the tank, so the gague works as you use the fuel!

Fuel Guage

Cleaned the electrical connector block terminals with wet and dry, the one you pull apart when removing the tank, cleaned the pins and the female part, put it all back together and filled up the tank. All bars working again on guage.
Noticed this fault the other day when the fuel warning light came on early, did a search on this site and read that cleaning the connector block was the answer . Worked for me. Five minute job.:thumb

the filler neck protrudes into the tank quite a bit to provide an air space to allow for expansion in hot climate/sunny day
if you drill a small hole in the neck, 1mm
you will be able to get another 1 or 1 1/2 lires in which will /should push the gauge to max bars
i think steptoe posted that he had done this to his bike yonks ago .
But the down side is tha if you do fill up and a hot day and leave it in the sun the fuel will leak out !
