Changed the final drive oil, dead easy and gave me a chance to give the arse of the bike a good clean.
The oil was black-black but looked like oil. Well worth changing but feckin hell what a smell like a stink bomb.

Fecking 'ell...

Isn't this supposed to be replaced at 60,ooo or something...

Mines just clocked 16,000 so was going to change the engine oil... should I do the Final drive too???

If so... what kinda oil should I use

Hey, use Castrol SAF-XO 75W-90 Full Synthetic Diff Oil. I don't mind the "missing" drain plug on my 05 GS, as it give me the chance to inspect the driveshaft and lube the splines on the FD. Do it at least once a year.

Annually? wow

What kinda mileage are you doing???

I do around 16000, no winter driving. Recon oil is cheap, FD's are expensive. After seeing how much water that can penetrate the rubber boot between the FD and the swing arm, I want to check the driveshaft and change the oil annually.

What is this cleaning thing?
For the small price of the small amount of oil required surely regular chages
are not a problem I change my 1150 about every 1000 when on a long trip
or as soon as I reach home.

just for info its easier to put the splines back together if you have the universal joint on the driveshaft turned so it gives you the most up/down movement - only takes a few moments that way otherwise you are pissing about trying to get it back together.
