fd refurb

With regard to repaired FD's. Have any of these since failed if so what sort of mileage had they done before failing again ?? The reason I ask this is I heard from a fellow who works at BMW & he tells me that they will not repair FD's as they always fail again, They sell the bearings & spares but can't recomend repair. They say its going to cost you £300 or so to repair with no warranty or £900 with 2 years warranty.

Well GUYS what do you think ??????

yer pays yer money and makes a choice, who can say,its a bit of a lottery new fd or rebuilt,

Depends who does it, take a look at the other FD thread currently running. If its just jammed back together with new bearings and isnt shimmed properly its likely to fail again. You can also get it done for a lot less than £300

i fail to see how any one can overhaul these units for much less than £300 .if All FOUR bearings and all the seals,o rings etc are replaced the bill for parts is around £200 add into that the minimum of three hours labour to do the job properly.obviosly it would be a lot cheaper if you only replaced the two wheel bearings:augie then you would probably get a bill for @£200ish.

Do you re-shim as well?

And what is involved in the shimming, is this a very technical / difficult thing to do, or is it just the factory assembly lines do not have sufficiently skilled staff?

I would still be tempted to pay £900 and just get the latest breather version, if for no other reason than you know all the bearings are new and you are not being ripped off on a crappy refurb (reconditioned engines anyone? The problem with anything lie this is you have no way of knowing if the job has been done properly or not) and it holds more oil so in theory all other things being the same it is likely to last better - plus the warranty of course.

rasher,i dont reshim the unit because that would take the rebuild to a completely different level in labour, however i have been rebuilding gearboxes and differentials for many years and you tend to get a feel for what is acceptable in terms of backlash and end float etc,all of the units i have worked on have been absolutely fine once the bearings have been replaced.:thumb2.mike
