I have an 04 1200 and had the oil changed in 07.Just booked in at C.W. and said I wanted FD oil changed again this year and was told that they change the oil every year now on the 1200's. Just the job.
FD unit oil change, glad I looked.

Or read this "How to". Its American so they quote 75W140 oil rather than the SAF-XO we use in Europe, but the write up is very informative.

HAVING A GO
on account of my tyre being flat at the bottom, thought I would have a go at this.
so far, so good, but waiting for oil to be delivered, so have not fully dismantled yet. Confucius say (wise man do not fup what he cannot unfup)
I note there are two oils SAF-XJ, which is 75-140 and SAF-XO, which is 75-90.
the USA thread is brilliant - even I can't seem to f it up.
Did have trouble with the M5 screw holding the ABS cable clip. Heated it with a needle flame from a soldering torch. Used kitchen foil to shield the cable from the heat. It worked well and I will remember that. Only need enough heat to crack the corrosion seal, no need to have it glowing like a cherry. doubt that it even reached 100C, but the needle flame allows you to get very localised heat.
Uh, judging by the smell, some haemorrhoid cream would not go amiss in there.

Andres.....think that change at first service started in early 2007. My dealer didn't catch the notification and did my first service on my 07 ADV without changing the fd lubricant. I found out about the change and got it done at 4000 km. Strongly recommend fd lubricant change at first run-in service and then at least every 20,000 kms, preferably less so you can see what is going on back there. Best and cheapest preventative for fd issues.

I have a december '07 R12GS; my dealer has replaced FD oil on 1.000, 10.000 and 20.000 km services. When asked, dealer replied that this is now standard.
Bahnstormer sells Castrol SAF-XO at £15 for a 1 litre bottle. Considering you need approx 230ml to do a change, thats 4 years worth of annual changes for £15 and an hours spannering every year.
Is it worth risking an FD failure for that money.
Hmm, Pidcocks are charging £30 per litre!!!
You could even find it dearer than that if you look.... best of luck with your quest.

Either Bahnstormer are selling at a good price to attract sales on other items, or else Pidcock are too pricey. I'd suspect the latter.
I changed the oil in my FD yesterday, cleaned the brake caliper and fitted a new Galfer wave rear disk as the old disk was badly worn (metal was soft as chocolate anyway).
The FD oil was black but didn't smell anywhere near as bad as it did in the previous FD that was fitted to my bike. I changed the current oil at about 8000 miles.The previous FD had done about 15,000 and it stank the garage out. I was annoyed to find dry splines as the previous FD fitted had its splines lubed by me during an oil change prior to a dealer replacement just outside warranty due to oil seal leakage.
I've enough oil left in the bottle to do another 3 FD oil changes, which will take me roughly another 30,000 miles or about 3 years. Not bad for £15.

Timpo .............take a look at this post from a mate of mine , KevC . His had never been offroad or forded either . I can't remember the mileage at this point but I think it was about 25k and 2.5yrs old.

After my FD went ****up at 3000miles i change the oil between each service,
i ask for the FD oil to be changed at the sevice also. Williams Manchester do the work and i have only ever been changed for the oil
did'nt stop me from getting myself a spare FD thou:: you no just in-case..
