Several days back changed the FD oil, sparingly greased splines and cleaned back wheel. Checked for any seepage in housing, none.

Into a planned long journey now, several hours back stopped for fuel. There is a significant amount of moly grease dripping and splashed in a Andy Wahol type pattern over rear wheel and disk.
It's not a pinion seal leaking, mixing with the moly grease,or is it, or do I know what the feck my mind is dreaming up since finding this forum. More likely I'm unecessarily worrying . Tomorrow it will be fine. FFS

Clean it up all lovely again an just keep a close eye on it.
O ring on the speedo sensor ok? Or maybe just a bit of extra grease that's got warm

Agree with shunt. Give it a clean and keep an eye on it. It would be Sod's Law if a seal happened to fail because of what you did.
I'm still paranoid about checking my rear wheels for oil 5k miles after replacing the FD when the main seal failed.
The ABS O ring is a well known thing for not being replaced or changed after using it to refill with oil. But we did that, didn't we?

The ABS/speed sensor o ring has deterioted, but not so much from past experience to scream a complete art design.
I'm grabbing at straws here, could it be that o ring?

Sod's law ,plan so long and dream about it, it's bound not to happen. Others are worse off.

They can get cut while putting the sensor back in. Some even forget to put one in. Hi bendy. :D
Can make a mess. I now keep a couple spare for FD oil changes. At £1.10 each, it's worth it.
Have you determined if it's FD oil that's on the wheel and is it still doing it?
Is it dropping straight on to the rim or is it running down the FD housing from the outer seal? The outer seal is the easy(cheap) one.

Difficult to say, looks like grease, but I never put that much on the splines before starting my trip.
Plus last time I put 180ml oil in and took out near 160ml. I was a little worried but, decided to close my eyes to the obvious signs. It's coming from the housing.

2006 GSA bites the dust.
Thanks for the input gents but It's fec.ed.

I use 200ml at all oil changes with no seal issues - unless I forget to fit the speedo sensor O ring Been there done that and oil P***ed out. Such a mess.

Mike from Overland and Classic does a full build on FDs. Parcel it over to him and he will send it back all done.

Alternatively get a used later model FD that resolved some of the original issues. Gear ratios might be different between models so check before buying.

Yup. When my TC started to show the same symptoms I had my fingers crossed that it was the ABS seal. Of course, it wasn't.
For some technical reasons, the TC FD is more expensive to rebuild than the SC. Mine was going to cost £430 to fix a duff seal!
I appreciate that once Mike is in there, it's false economy not to renew everything. Still brings tears to the eyes of an owner of the ultimate riding machine.
As Bendy has already said, an alternative is to look for a later FD. They are compatible and as far as I'm aware, the ratio is the same. This is the road that I took.
I sourced one on eBay from a breaker in the Netherlands. It was from an R nine T and they claimed it had only done 6000km.
It was date stamped Nov 2014 and in mint condition, so I reckoned it wasn't too far out. The ratio stamp is the same as the GS.
Ordered on the Monday for £332 including p&p and I had it in my sweaty hands, in Northern Ireland by Wednesday lunchtime!
Darker paint than original but I can live with that. Even got £50 for the old FD, plus a spare ABS sensor.
Whether you get yours rebuilt or buy another, REMEMBER TO PUT OIL IN IT BEFORE YOU USE IT!
Mine will be getting it's oil changed at every service from now on. And I'm using the heavy stuff that bendy and a few others recommend. Funnily enough, my main seal failed within two weeks of having the outer seal replaced after it failed.

Black artwork on the rim might just be brake dust dust mixed with some water. Clean it, ride and see if it reapears.

The repair for my 08 FD came to a lot more than the basic rebuild. I needed a new drive shaft UJ and the bottom trunnion bearings were shot, so my repairs cost double what I'd hoped. But hey, it is the ultimate driving machine.

It definitely oil dripping from the underside ' oval hole', don't know the technical term for that...erm...hole / vent.
I did buy a second hand one and its in my garage, guess I was waiting for the right time to swap them over, think I waited too long.
I also got it from eBay, 250 quid and was fitted with the updated flange, so I figured the Po had looked after his bike. For others looking on eBay , type in 'cardano, kardan ', you'll get more results from Europe and better prices.

+1 on the better prices in Europe.
There's loads of LC FD's available for a lot less money and usually better condition. Pity they're a mirror image version of the hexheads.
