Fed up Mutlistrada owner !

Only bike I seriously considered recently.
I have 3 friends that have them, of that 3, one is now on his third:eek Replaced by the dealer, the other two have not had any probs as yet.

It is the electrickerywizardry that puts me right off......And for good reason so it seems.

The 'base' model doesn't have (most of) the fancy electrickery IIRC?

I spent a weekend in Wales recently with a guy on one, he uses it all year round as an everyday bike and has had no issues; I thought it was flipping lovely, fitted me really well, handled like a dream and as for that engine :drool

Multi Corrosion

I was looking at the Multistrada to replace my GS, but we looked at a three month old one last summer which was very badly corroded (every fastener and front/rear axles etc.) despite being registered in March 2011 :eek As my bike lives in a cold, damp concrete garage, i felt even a new one would disintegrate over winter.

The next one we looked at was nearly as bad and then Cobb & Jagger double booked their demo bike and wasted my time one Saturday morning, so I took my bat and ball home

Well thats another issue on my bike , having ridden it a few times in the winter months practically every fastener and wheel spindle nuts etc are badly corroded far worse than my Yamaha FZ1 which also got ridden in winter months

fed up

Dave
you have my sympathy.
I had a 749R that was in the dealer more time than I had it.
Not only was the bike a pain but the dealer was about as much use as a chocolate fireguard...
Put me off Ducati ... At least if I have a problem with my bmw my local dealer goes out of his way to sort it.

Bike had a panigale on test this month.

retired early with a hole punched through the crankcase :augie

Hi Folks , I bought a Ducati Multistrada 1200st just before Christmas new 2012 model , I can report its a fantastic bike to ride , the best ! ... However as far as reliabilty goes its the worst bike I have ever owned since a 10 year old BSA C15 that I had in 1976! the issues are endless , ranging from minor niggles too pretty serious stuff like endless siezing of the ex flapper valve , cutting out when putting into gear , battery discharging when ign off ,back brake is useless etc , I wont go into all of it here its just too much and I am fed up with it , Did previously felt pulled to a BMW GS but the Multi won me over, Ive joined too keep a eager eye on your posts and experiences , If this Multi isnt sorted finally for good and pretty quickly I think i,ll be jumping ship and joining you guys

Sorry to hear of your woes.....nothing worse.

I am still undecided re "adventure" type bike but you SHOULD consider an XT1200z Super Tenere..

I'd sell it quickly before the engine blows up - happened to one of the bike mags recently - buy the best and get a GS, the Multistrada is already history :D

Why put up with an unreliable bike, I agree, well past the time to jump ship!

as for buy the best and get a GS, what an ironic statement

Just wondering what pleasure you derive from frequenting this parish if thats your view

Whilst sales figures don't make a great bike the GS does seem quite popular.

Combined first quarter sales of the class-leading BMW R 1200 GS (293) and R 1200 GS Adventure (240) variant have made BMW Motorrad’s iconic adventure sports motorcycle the UK’s best-selling powered two-wheeler in 2012.

I also don't own or trust the GS reliability
And doubt it's round the world ability but I still frequent this site a great deal and enjoy it .

We are not all fans of the gs !

Didn't realise I had to own one of these bikes to be able frequent this parish, I like many others appreciate the bike, just don't feel its the best for me. Plain enough explanation?

At last you speak some sense :thumb

Hi Dave I feel your pain having followed this thread on the Ducati forum and it was one of the threads I read on there that made me think have I done the right thing.

That question can only really be answered by each one of us individually I'm afraid and for the bad luck you have had with your MTS, I'm sure there are many more that have had trouble free motoring.

Hope you still stick around the Duke forum though, as your friendly banter and witty comments are one of the many reasons the place has a buzz about it, very much like this forum :thumb

Whatever bike you end up with though, enjoy it mate and ride safe :beerjug:

Just like BMW and other brands getting a trouble free model is a bit of a lottery.

I think that should read "Other European Brands" :hide

I am a huge fan of the GS, but one was enough, could not take the gamble on getting a lemon, it seems most GS' are fine, but some seem to have one expensive failure after another - but I suspect BMW would be far better at resolving issues than Ducati if you did get a Friday afternoon special.

I chose a Tenere, but I think anything Japanese would be a far safer proposition after your Ducati woes.

I did a short mountainous French trip a few weeks ago and there was a guy on a Multistrada who had had several problems with his bike from new, culminating with finding cracks in the heads just the right side of the warrenty ending.
Despite all of that he still rated the bike, don't think I could put up with the uncertainty of knowing if you had a good or bad one, a bit of a lottery !

In my experience if you want guaranteed reliability dont buy a ducati, you need to be prepared for a few compromises along the way, they can be a labour of love but when everything clicks they are like nothing else. I have owned 3 recent ducati models now bought used from main dealers. two have been very good needing only minor non service repair items, one (second 1098s) needed a clutch swapping out, my multistrada has had the rear brake upgraded but nothing else in my short ownership . my first 1098s was plagued by issues including gearbox dropping second gear, clutch noise, engine stalling, running rich, non of which were fixed and it broke down the day i got it due to a dodgy immobiliser transmitter.

I sold the duff one because i lost faith in the brand and the dealer i used at the time, but i didnt half regret it later, as its replacement non ducati (japanese) just didnt evoke the same riding emotions.

I would describe ducati dealers as enthusiastic but 'small time' compared to the one slick outfit bmw dealer i have dealt with.

First weekend i got my multistrada i had some guy chewing my ear off about how he had had one that broke down in switzerland, and how he was now back on a bmw gs, thing is i wasnt bothered he was rabbiting on :blagblah inadvertently pissing on my chips, id just had a blast one one of my favourite routes on what is probably one of the quickest, most exciting road bikes going and i was smitten with a ducati all over again.:thumb2
