Any recommendations on how to reduce the turbulence from my screen?

I am 6ft tall, ride a standard GS adventure 2003 with the grey and red standard seat and standard screen.

I am getting a lot of turbulence so bad that it blurs my vision occasionally.
I wear an Arai Tour X helmet.

Heard some people say that a taller screen will help a lot? Is this the case? Or is impossible to reduce the buffeting?

Any help gratefully read.....:mmmm

I would try going for a blast with the peak removed from the helmet first, just to find out if the peak makes any difference to the level of buffetting.
I have an 1100GS with an MRA screen on its highest setting. I also wear a Tour X.
I find that at high speed in `clean` air there is no problem at all, but when I am behind a van or lorry I get a kind of shaking of the head which can become a bit tiresome on a long run.

MRA

Is the way to go,my 1150gsa was transformed with the MRA screen. As above peak probably adds to problem............

I'm 6'3 and have a cee bailey adventeuro or something like that. Brilliant... big yes but brilliant. No wind or buffetting at all!

buffeting

i had the same problem with my 04 gsa 1150
tobinators sorted it even better to ride now
bought second hand from a really nice tosser off here

I would also recommend MRA Vario screen (got mine form Jaws), but if you want to try a set of tobinators I have a secondhand set you can have for half the price Nippy Normans will charge you (and if you don't like them you can always sell them on for the same price :))

I ride a standard r1150 gs with the standard screen and wear the arai tour x 3 helmet. I'm 6ft 3inchs and suffered the same as you with the blured vision I fitted the touratek screen extension and its a lot better since.

Now if I had an adverture screen fitted that is higher as you know it would be perfect. May be a cheaper option for you.

+1 for the MRA. Have mine on the lowest setting - slightly more wind on shoulders but much less turbulence (1100GS)

Thanks for advice - i have the adventure model but the screen height is still killing me...:nenau

Thanks for the offer Grim Rider - have your tobs got the adventure mountings?:thumb

+1 for Tobinators! :thumb2 Transformed my ride.

I had a std 1150 and had the same issue. Tried an adventure screen, then tobinators,a wunderlich screen extender, but the only thing that did it was the MRA vario screen.Brilliant.I'm 6ft also.

MRA, dont wear a tour x or similar shape+peak is a lot of the problem IMO

Another +1 for Tobinators. I'm 6'4" and the buffeting was a royal pain, until I got a set of Tobers' finest.

Best go-faster option ever for my bike - added an extra 10mph onto the comfortable cruising speed.... :D

It amazes me that every time this comes up all the answers are taller, bigger, more upright, or add a lip or an aerofoil.

When I had an 1150 I found a similar problem like I had on my previous RS, but in both cases found it much better to lower the screen, cut any flipup lip off and smooth the airflow off the screen aiming it just on/over shoulder level leaving the head and helmet in clean undisturbed air.

Try ridng with the screen in its lowest position and then when the turbulance starts lift yourself up off the seat and see if like me you find a point at which it all goes quiet and still. If so this is where you want to be when sitting.

The helmet manufacterers like arai make their helmets to be as aerodynamic and quiet as possible, so you have to get it in clean air to make the best use of all their efforts.

I must admit that so far I haven't been able to get my 850 right, the screen on this one doesn't lend itself to being tipped back like the 1150 did. Although I now have a spare screen to play about with when i get a few mins spare.

:thumb +1 Littledumstruck. I have a standard GS, tried all sorts of screens and positions with torbs.

Best I got is with torbs and MRA. Torbs angled back as far as possible with MRA on lowest setting. 80 MPH visor open no problem.

Agree with the "van" comment which is the only down side. If your not in clean air then buffeting does return. Helps me keep my distance on the motorway. If you want a pic of the set up, let me know.

I had the same set up as you

The Tour x looked the dogs ,looked really cool, but it twas like riding with a woodpecker on speed banging on yer helmet, poxy thing. The two best things about the arai was the day i bought it and the day i sold it.
I now use an airoh s4,looks similar to the tour x,but no flappy peak and also for hi speed blasts, i use a schuberth s1.
Also i use the std gsa screen with Tobinators, it takes a bit of time setting up,but when you get it right its great.
Also try a tankbag ,they change the aerodynamics again, first thing though, flog the arai, bloody peak.
Keep yer eyes open for a secondhand set of tobys for a gsa.
have fun
Paul
