I have the same problem. Next-to-nil signal in any room away from the router, and there's no easy cure.
The problem has been discovered to be down to the fact that the house is old (i.e. very, very old) and the bricks in the dividing walls have a high metallic content acting like a shield. The damn place is effectively lead-lined!
lob in some CAT5/6 ethernet cable. much faster, more secure, and more reliable than wireless.

That should be all you need, you'll also need another ethernet cable to go from the old router to the new hub, but i've got one of those kicking about anyway if you haven't got one. You won't need the old modem at all.
