hi,my bike has been struggling to spin over lately despite optimate use.
its out of warranty by 4 months, this is pants.

i seem to have noticed many people have had battery problems and they also seem to be using an optimate or battery charger. I had my bike stored for about 3 months but prob closer to 4 months, i forgot to disconnect the battery and expected it to be dead when i went to start it last week - it started straight away, no charger.

do you only do very short trips so need to have the battery on charge all the time?

smart

not really,my work commute is 50miles but didnt use it much over the winter cos of the amount of salt on the roads-i use my smart car in those conditions.

optimate

A couple of friends had optimates on their bikes last winter, both resulting in fried batteries:eek:. So when i was looking to buy a charger for myself, went to Hein Gericke, talking to the bloke in there he did tell me they had a few complaints about said charger. He recommended that i try another brand (oxomiser) cheaper and no problems.:thumb

We have three bikes consistantly on Battery Tenders....... one is almost always plugged in. its rarely ever ridden now............. the other two usually do between 100 to 200km at the weekends but we always plug them in when garaged. So apart from the one that only gets out once a year......is it ok to keep the other two plugged in after every ride??

Anyone had an optimate want to go into desulphate mode when the battery seems perfectly good?

Yes mine does that, I also have a KTM with a spare Battery and it does it with all of them.

A point worth noting is I left it on the KTM over the winter and it would hardly turn over when I tried it, so just when I was on the point of replacing said battery I put the old fashioned type car charger on overnight - its like a new one now and still whizzing the bike over a month on.

Replaced the optimate with a CTEK - seems ok

I think that GS1200's are slow to crank anyway as it its a fairly small battery with 2 big cylinders and probably thick oil this time of year.

Perhaps synthetic oil would help, maybe I'll start a "which oil" thread????????????
