Can any one advise me on the best way to fix a punchure there is a small nail in my rear tyre the tp monitor on the computer picked it up at least that works! I have been fortunate not to have had many punchures in tubeless tyres so am a little inexperianced in ways of repair

Fixing punctures is relatively straightforward though the whole deal is subject to opinion as tyres are of course a safety critical item.

If you want to fix it yourself there are kits consisting of mushroom shaped plugs that can be inserted with a special tool from the outside. Some people swear by them and reckon they are a permenant fix, others regard them only as an emergency get-you-home measure. Do a search in this forum and you'll get a better idea.

Tyre shops can fix punctures (subject to some fairly strict conditions based on the size of the hole and its position on the tyre). This involves taking the tyre off the wheel and inserting aplug from the inside.

It seems to me that non-specialist tyre shops are increasigly reluctant to fix punctures in bike tyres, possibly due to fear of litigation if it should go wrong and therefore the 'safest' advice is not to repair but to replace the tyre.

Exactly the same as you would do in a car.

As long as the nail isn't in the "wrong" place, then get it plugged. The difficult job is finding someone to do it.

If you didn't have TP monitors, you could put a tube in there....

My brother used Guilford Tyre for a puncture repair done recently - so a proxy +1 for them on his comments

Roadwheel in Fleet have done my bike tyres in the past.

I have not been to the Guildford place - but Roadwheels has a small well kitted bike service bay and can do bike MOTs as well. For some reason often seems to have small MX and offroad bikes in bits there whenever I go.

Puncture repair kits come with all fitting instructions so you shouldn't worry about being left at the side of the road at someone elses mercy.

I fixed the last puncture I had with a kit off ebay. One of the ones with the sticky 'tails' that you shove in using a tool with a bit of rubber cement for good measure. It never leaked.

No - although they do look the business.

I actually used one of these (although not from China) with great results.

Just found a puncture in my scoot, so I might treat myself to one of those posh kits from busters.

For years I have used Rema Tip Top plug kits whicg I believe are also marketed by BMW Motorrad. Same principle as those shown. Cover a plug with rubber, push into hole with supplied tool, pull tool out, cut off excess plug on outside and inflate tyre.

I have used these on bike, Land Rover and wife's SEAT. Also when caught on M25 with no plugs the RAC fixed the flat with the same kit. The instructions state tyre should be vulcanized as well but I have never bothered and the plugs have never lost air.

Surminator, gwt along to Halfords and buy a repaire kit, its a 10 minute job, follow the instructions with the kit or do a search for repair method.

Its very easy and does not require removal of anything apart from the nail.

I picked up a new sort of kit the other week from the local bike shop. Instead of the reamer, mushrooms, glue and knife, it was a little plastic thing that you screw into the tyre and snap off flush. I like it as it looks to be much quicker than the other method, and the last place that I needed to do a repair was on the peripherique, and it felt like I was taking my life in my hands with every extra second I was crouching there next to the line of traffic.

Possibly it's more of a get you home solution than a permanent one, but I'm happier carrying that than the other kit, especially as I face the thought of doing it in the pitch black and freezing cold if needed in the next few months.

Repair outfits

Most of my previous BMW's were fitted with repair kits and miniature compressed air cycliners - but I never used one! When i spotted a nail in my rear tyre I went straight to a tyre specialist and it was plugged in situ and gave no trouble - but it depends on the size of the hole and the whereabouts.

Yep plugs, repAIR PATCHES,whatevers are a get home job not for ever,if not got tyre pressure monitors in put ultaseal in then pull the nail out and the hole will seal an you can use it till its bald without it leaking from the said hole:clap:bounce1:thumb2
