Fender Extender or Engine Protector?

I'm looking at fitting at least some protection for the front of the engine, but can't decide between a front mudguard extender (quite like the idea of the MachineArt non-drill one) or an engine protector (something like that made by Cymarc). Interested in any views or opinions that one method might be better than the other.

If the bike is a GSA LC i dont think the fender extender and the crud catcher fit so you have to choose

Personally i would go with the Cymarc crud catcher

I've fitted the fender extender and been impressed at how clean the front of the engine now stays, though to be fair I haven't had it out in any really bad weather yet. I think if you can stop the crud at source it is probably preferable to letting the crud be flung off the tyre but then have it splatter the crud catcher plus other parts of the bike that the catcher doesn't cover. If nothing else stopping it at source must make cleaning the bike easier. That is for road use - serious off road use may be a different matter.

Get the fender extender.

I had the Wunderlich engine protector but did not like the fact that the crud accumulated behind it and very tight against the engine to clean behind it. So I removed it.

Fender extender does a great job

I ordered the fender extender and mudsling deal from NN with no issues. It arrived the following day. Just make sure they are in stock before you order.

The Machineart fender extender does a real good job and matches the BM mudguard finish.

AltRider engine plate with quick release feature other makes do not offer and machine art fender extender. Nothing catching, nothing rubbing.

Cymarc crud stopper, and machine art fender extender.....
They will fit together on a GS (don't know about the GSA)

Both together keep all the crud off the front of the engine.
If you just want one, then the MachineArt fender extender would be my choice.

Having said I was happy with just the fender extender so far, though I'd not used the bike in bad weather, yesterday I had to drive through some muddy puddles due to a water main burst, and found that I was still getting a bit of splatter on the front of the engine, so I will maybe fit a crud catcher as well. Some splatter on the back of the bike too - so looks like a Mudsling is needed as well.

every GS or GSA should have a mudslinger fitted as std by BMW ....it saves the shock form getting blasted with shite and your trousers,as the mud and rain comes out the side onto your legs..the rear mudsling stops this .....NNs are doing a double offer of mudsling and front extender at present

I just have NN mudsling and fender extender combo.

Both doing there job well.

I didn't bother with crud catcher as I want to see whats going on with any corrosion development on engine case.

So far, after 3000 miles all is good.

Cheers for the new replies. Having ridden most of Saturday in the rain, I can see why the Mudsling might be useful! I'll look into getting that and a front extender but you'd think this kind of protection should be standard ;-)

I installed a front fender extender on my GSA, I think it's made by Pyramid. It looks just like an extension of the fender and it works very well. In fact I've put them on almost every bike I've had. It comes with strong double sided tape and screws but rather than use the screws I use adhesive instead. To do it you almost have to remove the fender because it'll need to be clamped until the adhesive sets up. The trick is to use "plastic bonding epoxy", scuff sand the mating surfaces first then clean with alcohol to remove any dust and film of mould release, epoxy and clamp. Been doing it like this now since my 1988 K75S.
